Mystery bird in Powassan, Ontario

Mystery bird in Powassan, Ontario

Came out of our driveway and it was sitting in a tree.

We live in Powassan, Ontario - just south of North Bay.

It was 10:30 in the morning.

I have never seen it before. It got skittish and flew away, it has a very large wing span, didn't go very far, just to another tree.

I was wondering if it might be something that is making its way north, as other birds seem to be doing.

Thank you for sending this picture - I'm not sure what type of Hawk it might be, but perhaps one of our readers will know.

I will also post this on our Facebook page as our facebook followers will also enjoy this.

Pterodactyl

That is a pterodactyl! I'm 100% positive, no doubt in my mind! I've seen them before!

Thanks for writing, but I'm not sure that's the right answer!

This looks to be in my opinion a Rough Legged Hawk.

Hawk ID

Although this is a large bird, it still is much
smaller than a Bald Eagle. What you have seen here is Rough-legged Hawk.

Rough Legged Hawk
by: Lenna

I'm not much of an expert, but I love to learn. Although it looks very similar to a juvenile Bald Eagle or a Peregrine Falcon, I tend to lean towards the Rough-Legged Hawk as well because of certain distinct markings on this bird like its pale streaked breast and dark belly and its broad white tail with dark tip.

I'm pretty sure it is a juvenile Red Tailed Hawk.

What is this?

I'm not 100% positive but I think this may be a Rough-legged Hawk. They are a large hawk 19-21 in. (48-51 cm).
They breed in the Tundra and Arctic region and are solitary birds and there is quite a variance in their colouring.
This looks like a first year juvenile with the pale head and dark belly.

Bald Eagle?
by: Brian

Looks like a Juvenile Bald Eagle - if you google it, the photos look very similar.

Unknown Bird

Could it be a young Peregrine Falcon? Definite bird of Prey, almost looks like a Northern Harrier? Or from the Osprey family? Anyone else have a guess?
