Turkey Vultures in Petro Park

(Oakville, Ontario, Canada)

Hawks have been a fairly common sight along Bronte Creek in Oakville for as long as I can remember, but until recently the only place I'd seen Turkey Vultures was at our family cottage in Haliburton.

I take my dogs to Petro Canada Park several times a week for a romp and maybe a swim, and noticed a much larger bird flying overhead.

After getting my mega zoom lens and DSLR camera down there one afternoon, I discovered the park is now home to a new type of raptor.

Turkey Vultures

One of the best places to see Turkey Vultures is at the Mono Centre Park up on the cliffs. At times, they will be flying at the same height as you are and if you get your camera speed right, you can get some wonderful pictures.
A few years ago, I was hiking on Seneca College (King Campus). Just as it was getting dark, I came upon 4 Turkey Vultures sitting on a roof of a now torn down farm house. It was a very scary scene (last light of the day) so I hustled myself out of there. It was like a scene from a horror movie.
