The Suburban Burlington Coyote

by Bob Bryden
(Burlington, Ontario, Canada)

I saw a Coyote at the corner of Upper Middle and Augustine in Burlington, Ontario while driving home from work the other night around 11:30 p.m.

It's not a romantic 'notion' to say that when you meet a WILD animal 'you'll just KNOW'.

This creature was moving rapidly but stealthily with eyes and head darting. I think it's the ears that gave it away as not being a dog and the sleekness and colouring as not being a Wolf.

There are some wooded patches and ravines in the area where I saw him.

We also had some kind of encounter a few months back while filming a scene for a movie, after midnight in a fairly secluded wooded spot.

We heard squealing type sounds at first coming from the ravine followed by a chorus of really creepy growls.

I assume there were pups nearby and the adults were getting protective.

We left the area pretty fast as the darkness was formidable.

Thanks, Bob, for sharing this story of your Coyote encounter with us@

Coyote Sighting

A coyote was spotted this morning at 8:00 am walking down Fisher Ave in Burlington. It turned right onto Mount Forest then another right onto Mountain Grove. It walked directly in front of the verandas on the left side of the street before walking onto the first court. Where it journeyed into the right side of a home and into their backyard.

I've seen the same coyote 3 times in the last 2 weeks during the day. In the area of Upper Middle Road and Cavendish Drive. Just before the 407.
First time was around 2 pm running across Upper Middle. Second time running down Upper Middle around 9 am near Cavendish. Third time this morning (July 1) on Cavendish on the front lawn of the house on the corner. He had something in his mouth. Maybe a bird.

I saw one in the ravine in the back of my condo complex orchard uptown. It is located at Upper Middle and Appleby. It was around 10:30 at night and it was just at the fenceline and my little dogs were outside with me. We quickly ran back inside.

Coyote sighting in hydro field by Colonsay
by: Anonymous

I was walking my dog at about 6:30 am through the hydro field just crossing Colonsay, walking towards Guelph Line. Saw one coyote in the field about 50 feet from the path we were on. Once it spotted us it took off running, past us towards the forested area behind Peart Park. It stopped in front of the forested area and just watched us. I know they are in the area but that was my first encounter that close.

While I was walking my dog this morning, I saw 2 coyotes on Euston Road. One was eating something in a neighbour's driveway. The other one came running towards us (we were on the road) and stopped at the edge of the curb. It was almost as if it was telling us to stay away because it's mate was enjoying breakfast. It was only a few feet away from us. I kept my dog next to me and backed away. Although I usually love seeing the Coyotes in the mornings, but this incident was scary. The larger Coyote came running towards us. I do want to add that I was not walking a small dog. I was walking a 100 lb Great Pyrenees. The Coyote should have run away and been afraid but was not.

Coyotes in our backyard
by: Anonymous

On Mon Jun 15, we happened to look out our window that looks out on to a field adjacent to our backyard and saw a Coyote. We saw him again Tuesday night, at the same time, but this time we realized that he was a she, as it had 3 puppies with her. Wednesday morning, she was having a snooze in the grass. Have been seeing her at least once every day. An animal control officer came around Thursday morning, but left empty-handed. She was out with her puppies again late Thursday afternoon, into the early evening. If they do catch her, I hope they realize that she's got puppies.

Thanks for sending this to us. The authorities won't catch her unless she is being a danger to people - as long as she is just going about her business and raising her young, they will leave her to get on with it.

Coyotes howling
by: David

We live near Upper Middle and the North side of the 407 ETR and often we hear Coyotes howling at at night. It's nice to have a feeling of nature around our home, but at the same time we're a bit concerned as we have two young children. We never let them play outside unattended.

Coywolf at Walker's Line and QEW
by: Helena

Yesterday at about 4 in the afternoon, while sitting on the back patio of Jake's Grill and Oyster House in Burlington, we were surprised to see a Coywolf walking through the Quality Inn parking lot next to Walkers Line, toward the front of the restaurant. Since we were sitting on the back patio, we lost sight of it once it reached the front of the restaurant. We stayed for another half hour or so, but did not see the Coywolf again. There were no people in the parking lot at the time, as far as we could tell.
The Coywolf was beautiful and appeared robust and healthy. It displayed no fear, aggression or confusion, and was walking quickly and purposefully. We were surprised to see a Coy-wolf in broad daylight and so close to this very busy traffic area. We assumed that it might have come from the wooded area behind the Travel Lodge next to the Quality Inn.
Wanting to know more about these animals, I found this Nature of Things doc on CBE: Meet the Coywolf. It's available here if anyone's interested - Coywolf Link

I saw one this week coming across Greenway Terrace and along the pipeline, probably the one from the 18th hole. It looked larger than a Coyote, maybe Coy-Wolf? Travelling very quickly.

Coyotes
by: Anonymous

We have seen them this winter several times, believe they are actually the hybrid coy-wolf as the male is quite large and looks more like a timber wolf. We live on the 18th fairway in Millcroft and are seeing them behind the house. Just saw a smaller female this morning, and see the big male 2 or 3 times a week. If they feed on Canada geese they have lots available,as they are invading the golf course as they do annually.

My first time ever seeing Coyotes in Burlington was tonight at about 11:00 pm. I was driving down Fisher Street and about to turn left on Mountain Forest Drive, and two ran out of the hydro field across Fisher and back down to the hydro field on the other side. They were close enough that I had to brake to let them cross the street.

Howling and yipping, sounded like several in Burlington
by: C Mateer

Through the night Saturday October 19th to Sunday October 20th, I was outside on my front porch. I went out several times, unable to sleep. Each time, I could hear the yipping and howling of what sounded like a group of Coyotes nearby. I live on Consort Crescent, near Lansdown and Headon (Walker's/Mainway). I know that there have been sightings in parks nearby, and since moving here in August 2008, I have seen a Coyote 3 times, twice on our street, once in our backyard. Be careful walking dogs, letting them out alone in backyards, and be careful if you allow your cats outdoors, especially at night. There are DEFINITELY coyotes in the area, and what I heard Saturday night was DEFINITELY a group of more than 1 coyote, it sounded like several.

Another Coyote Sighting in Burlington ON
by: Karin

While walking my dog Friday night (June 21/13) on Tobyn, two coyotes came charging out of the parkette about 10 yards in front of us heading north up to Tobyn and Kilmer (Walkers Line between Palmer and Upper Middle Road). It was extremely frightening.I'm glad they didn't see us they were running so fast they sounded like a heard of dogs moving, Thankfully, they never turned to see us. Again a highly wooded area, and streams run behind houses and townhouses. With all the growth in this area these poor unwanted and dangerous animals have no place to go. Watch you children, watch your pets, keep your cats and dogs in at night. I hear that Lakeshore, Paletta Mansion right through to Burloak is also overrun with these animals. What do we do? They're taking back their land!

February, 13 2013 - Coyote seen running up Barnett and then went down along Barker in the middle of the afternoon. No picture taken, it happened too fast. We have a cat that likes to go outside. Little too close to the houses when we don't have a forest or a ravine near by.

Just saw a coyote today Jan 22, 2012) at Appleby and Upper Middle walking through the plaza (McDonald's) at 9:30am!!

I couldn't believe it and followed it behind the plaza where there is a path.

I managed to get two pictures as did another man walking his dog.

Thanks for the info - please send your pictures to us, if you can, our readers would love to see them!

The Coyote population in Burlington is normal.

Most aggression is simply of a curious nature.

As a regular to Kerncliff Park, and Confederation Park, they can be seen most days.

I have been approached by Coyotes, and their interest is concentrated on my dog.

There is no need to grab our pitch forks and light the torches, just a understanding and respect of "what could happen" is required.

I know when I'm in their territory, and they allow me a gentle trespass.

I saw a Coyote today, December 28th at 1:00 in the afternoon in the park behind my house. We back onto Sherwood Forest Park near the baseball diamonds. The Coyote was in the new bike path the city has put in. I often see people walking their dogs off the leash in this area. Just thought people should be a little more careful.
