The Beavers Have Taken Over

Beaver Dam

Beaver Dam

We have a creek called Fletcher's Creek here in North West Brampton that currently has a very large Beaver dam built across it.

The dam is now at minimum 3 feet height and no less then 60 feet long (no kidding).

There's so much water behind the dam that the close by houses are in danger of being flooded if the dam should break.

The City of Brampton is now involved and working on a solution while also keeping the Beavers in mind.

These animals are clearly very smart and quite the engineers.

This all got started when I noticed all the Poplar trees were disappearing. It was obviously the work of beavers.

A quick trip down to the creek to investigate revealed where all the trees were going.

Thank you for writing to tell us about the busy Beavers in your neighbourhood!

I know our readers will enjoy this, so I will also post this on our Facebook page so that our Facebook followers can also enjoy it.

I didn't know about the one near Leons. Will go exploring. I have come face to face with Coyotes, but down in Clarkson.

William, Did you see the dams down in the ravine just west of the Leons across from McLaughlin Road? Have you ever heard the Coyotes late at night?

Went down and had a look. We found 2 dams and the lodge and several newly cut trees and stumps.

The Beavers
by: Anonymous

We've been living here in this part of Brampton for 15 years plus and seen just about every native animal there is to see.

The beavers are very nice and interesting - It's too bad they cause so much damage.

If the pond should stay in a few years time there would be fish in there and my daughter and I would have a place to go fishing.

Beavers in Brampton
by: Maureen

We too have Beavers behind our houses at Main Creek Park E. in Brampton (Williams Pkwy and McLaughlin). We have three dams behind us and a number of Beavers (as kits were born in the spring). Many trees have been taken down here as well by the Beavers. As a result, the City of Brampton has recently wrapped a number of them to help protect the ones still standing. I have been actively working with the city to ensure that the Beavers are not trapped and destroyed and at the same time trying to protect the trees. If the water levels get dangerously high, the city can install underground water baffles to help keep the water flowing.
