Possum in Whitby

width="485"

This Possum came out of my Cedar hedge in my backyard.

It was carrying a bird.

I didn't think Possums were around these parts.

Thanks for the info - yes, they are in and around Whitby, and I am adding other reports here as well.

I will also post this on our facebook page.

More Whitby Possums

May 22 2017 Thomas Estrada said ... We spotted one in my back yard in Whitby – it was nice and we are so happy!

June 27 2017 William Fisher rported ... A Possum was seen in backyard behind a gazebo. Seems to come back time and time again. We are in Whitby.

June 12 2017 Fred from Whitby, Thickson & Winterberry area told us ... A big one is living in this area!

June 14 2017 Rob from Whitby said ... I was walking my dog one morning when I spotted a dead animal. My dog wasn't interested, but I noticed it was a young possum about the size of a Guinea pig on its back, mouth open. It had no signs of injury and otherwise looked quite healthy. Having heard of "playing possum" I walked away and watched it get up and climb a tree.

July 28th 2017, Whitby, Kylie wrote ... on a Friday night I had friends over to drink at my place. Around midnight I let my dog outside to do his business and the next thing you know I hear this rattling against the fence. My dog was going ballistic, my friends and I went to look around with a flashlight. Next thing you know we see a Possum playing dead in my mom's garden. My dog must have put it in a state of shock cause when we went to put my dog inside (weren't sure if he was going to get rabies) and go back to the scene, the Possum had disappeared. Now I hope to God I don't see or hear this little bugger again!

UPDATE: Kylie wrote to say that every time her little dog goes out in the yard, he checks the exact spot where he "killed" the Possum! How funny is that!

Thanks for the update Kylie!

Possum front porch Whitby
by: Anonymous

The other night around midnight we had a big one on our front porch! It was huuuge and we are at Thickson Road and Kendalwood. I've only ever seen one before at my cottage near Orillia. I had no idea they were here in the suburbs and cities.
My bf had the cat in his arms so I freaked out and shut the door but I wish I got a better look now!

Wasaga Beach
by: Peter

I saw my first possum 25 years ago in Brampton, in my garbage box. Yesterday I let 2 go that I trapped in my back yard here in Wasaga Beach, at the tip of Georgian Bay. I find them as ugly now, as I did then.

Possum in Whitby (West Lynde)
by: Anonymous

I have little dishes of food & seed on my back deck for a rabbit & chipmunk (& birds) that come to eat. Last night, I thought the rabbit was there, but it was a possum. When I tapped on the glass door, it just looked at me & wasn't even scared. When I opened the door, it did run away.
