Possum Sighting

by B Bishop
(Odessa, Ontario, Canada)

I live in Odessa, Ontario, which is a small town just west of Kingston.

We have a small creek in our back yard, and today looking out my window, I saw a Possum.

Rubbing my eyes, I looked again, and sure enough thats what it was!

I had no idea they were even around here.

Thought it was a RAT!
by: Anonymous

I live in Bath, Otario which is a little village between Kingston and Napanee. I have captured it three times on my outdoor security camera in the last month. At first I thought it was a RAT but was finally able to see it's face and not just the rat like tail. I will take a possum any day now that I know they eat ticks.

6:30 a.m. and just saw a possum ambling along between my house and my neighbour's.
Coming up behind it a smaller one. They let me get close enough to get photos and then the little one turned and ran, mother (?) following slowly. Never realized we had possums here.

I saw an opossum in downtown Toronto near Gerrard and River Street area while walking my dog. The dog was kind of startled and sort of looked at it wondering what the heck it was. Last night I had the little guy cuddled up in my bedroom. Luckily the cat was bored by it all and I managed to gently remove him by 5:00 am. What a gentle sweet creature. I wrapped him in a soft towel and just kept petting him. When he ran off a piece of my heart followed him. Please, if you find one in your home, do nothing to alarm them. It's a gift to have such a blessed encounter.

Absolutely massive opossum in my backyard in Oshawa tonight (McLaughlin area). Tried to get a decent photo through the glass but couldn’t. Didn’t want to use flash or open the door and scare it. Stared at me for a bit, probably more so my cats who were going nuts inside (floor to ceiling windows so they had a good view of each other), but it stayed totally chill and peaceful, just waddling about looking for grub. Very cool looking dude, my first ever sighting.

I came home from work around 11 pm and let my german shepherd outside. When I went to call him in, I saw this animal lying in the grass. I went to check it out and didn't know what it was, but it looked injured. It was lying with its eyes open on its side. I got a broom and prodded it a little and it showed its fangs and growled. I thought it best to just leave it and deal with it in the morning. I told my son and he went to see it and it was gone. I couldn't figure out how it moved because I thought it was half dead. I thought it was a possum, but I've never seen one. After looking it up on the computer, I now realize it was a possum that I think was scared of my dog and pretended to "play dead". Once we left and turned off the lights it took off. First sighting.

Opossum Sighting Oshawa - Aug 26, 2017

I live in Oshawa and I was visiting at my sister's house in Oshawa and I was sitting out on the porch with her daughter talking around 10:30 pm when suddenly she looks at me and says I think I see a raccoon in the tree behind you, so I slowly turn my head around and I see a face looking out at me from the tree with beady eyes, grey hair and a pointy noise and it was walking upside down going down the tree and I say to her that isn't a raccoon and she says what is it then, and I said I think it is an opossum and then she panicked. Then she said that she was going inside and I said well don't leave me out here with it, I'm coming in too. When I got inside I said I think I have only seen one in a zoo, so we googled it and I guess they are harmless. But that was a first ever sighting for me outside of a zoo and I have lived all over Canada.

Possum Cruisin' Downtown Kitchener
by: Kate

Two nights in a row over this weekend I've seen a pretty healthy-sized possum cruisin' around Scott and Weber which is right in downtown Kitchener -- although my husband thought I'd had one too many glasses of wine when I told him! Late on Saturday night I was sitting very quietly on my back deck and the little fella came right up on the deck and nibbled briefly on a small dish of cat food which was sitting no more than about 5 feet away from me. I just sat real still and watched him until he waddled off again on his night tour -- I don't think he even knew I was there. Hope to see him on one of his visits again (but I'll take away the cat food!)

I saw the possum come out of its burrow, that I thought belonged to a pair of rabbits, and proceeded to look for food in our flower garden. Saw one last night 11 pm on Dexter Line. FYI if you ever were to come across a dead one, there would be a great chance that there are babies in the pouch. If you have a wildlife rehabilitation center in your area, you could save their lives. It would be a good idea is to look up for your area and find out what they will rescue.

I parked on my driveway and opened the car door tonight at 11 pm. As I was gathering my things, a straggly Possum, the size of small to medium cat, sauntered right by the car door and moved towards the garage. I did not see where it went. I'm afraid it's in my backyard and I have two small dogs. This is East of Dixie north of Bloor.

The Possum poses no threat to your dogs, they fall over and "play dead" when they are cornered or threatened. They will avoid your dogs if they can and usually spend their time under a shed or front steps, and seem to mind their own business.

Mexican Stand-off
by: Anonymous

Yonge/Sheppard area.
It was just before 3 am and I went out the back of my work to have a cigarette break.
I thought it was a cat at first as it crossed the street toward me and I lost sight of it as it became obscured by the low retaining wall. It followed the wall curve around to my area and sure enough, it was an opossum. I thought I should take a picture of it, so I would be believed, and as it walked away from me, I took a step toward it. That first step had the sizable varmint spinning around to stare at me. Since I know any animal can be dangerous when feeling threatened, it was decided by mutual agreement between myself and the opossum that I would NOT take the picture and it would walk away, both of us unscathed from the impromptu encounter and surviving the Mexican-style stand-off.
First time I've ever seen one and I must admit I'm rather smitten.
Thank you for your comments, and my first chuckle of the day!

Last night about 10:00 pm I looked out my front door and noticed a fairly large possum come out from shrubs between my house and my neighbours. It slowly walked across the street and disappeared down a lane-way. I used to see a few a couple of years ago, but figured with the bitter winter we had they may not have survived. I guess I was wrong. Now I am wondering where it came from. Seems from the number of recent posts here that not only have possums survived the cold, they are thriving in Ontario.

Possum in Pickering
by: AmandaI

The other night, my husband said when he pulled in the driveway he saw a weird looking animal the size of a cat, with a long, rat tail. It looked at him and then ran under a bush and watched him come inside. He was creeped out. I thought it was a possum, but thought they were rare this far north.

Today I noticed our garbage can knocked over and bags ripped open. Raccoons! I thought. But when I went to clean it up, I saw a big, furry possum IN the garbage can! I shoo'd him away and yelled "Don't you eat our garbage, possum!" As he ran away, but I don't think he listened. ;)

We're at Liverpool and Bayly in Pickering. I've seen lots of wildlife in my time, but this is my first Possum sighting!

Dale Road area north of Coburg, Ontario.
I was just out on the deck and saw what I thought was a cat at my neighbors bird feeder.
I was brown with a bushy tail. When it waddled away the side profile with that pointed snout told me it wasn't a cat but a opossum.
I thought they had rat tails but after reading here I see they don't all have that.

January 10, 2014. 4pm. This afternoon my daughter and I drove down to Lake Ontario in South Pickering ..... the beach area at the bottom of Westshore Blvd. The only sights we expected to see was the beauty of the frozen lake. On our way home along Beach Promenade a possum came out of the bush. We had to stop the car so that it could pass and my daughter asked "What is that?", you just know its a possum. In my daughter's opinion they are not as cute and cuddly looking as the possum twins in Ice Age!

We had a cute little visitor in our backyard tonight. He was rummaging in the grass for sunflower seeds under the bird feeder. He was scared and ran away when I opened the back door. He was about 10" long. Most of his long tail had no fur on and his body fur didn't look very thick either. I don't know if this is normal or perhaps he was sick?
Anyway, I threw some walnuts and fresh apple pieces out for him which he eat when he came back. I saw a wild cat watching him from a distance. I hope that the little opossum managed to elude the cat & made it home safe with a full tummy.
I wonder how he will survive the cold with so little "clothing"?

A possum was hit by a car on the Twin Rivers / Shepherd area (rouge valley). There is a big conservation park in this region, so animals have no choice but to cross the windy road. I didn't see it hit, but the aftermath certainly scarred me. The poor little guy was struggling to walk so I knew he was badly injured. I quickly parked my vehicle. Before any more damage could be done by oncoming traffic, I quickly moved em to the side of the road. I noticed a serious gash on his torso and what almost looked like a broken jaw. It was terrible to see him struggling, gasping for a last breath of life. Unfortunately, the litle guy succumbed to his injuries. RIP POSSUM.

Yup, we have them too. The neighbour puts out food in her backyard. A few nights ago the Mrs. said she saw a huge rat, and I said: "Probably not a rat, just an Opossum." Then tonight the dog ran at our tree to get at it. I grabbed him by the collar and threw him inside and grabbed the flashlight. I went back out and the little critter was up on the chain link fence between the branches staring at me. Showed the wife the picture of one on the web and said again ..... not a rat.

Hello, my neighbour and I just saw what we thought was a rat, walk across our street and lay down across the street on a front porch. We got a husband's flashlight to look and see what exactly it is, and well, it's not a squirrel, nor a groundhog and its not a regular greyish white possum with a hairless tail. Surprised to see a Possum in North Oakville

Last night I went out to get groceries and I drove back and parked my car in the garage with the door still open. There I saw what I though was initially a little Raccoon, I took a closer look to study the little critter and it looked like a Possum and he was looking back at me. He seemed to have a mild disposition and was climbing the snow bank and trying to hide and enter another backyard.

I have seen Possums at the Zoo with my daughter, but still I questioned its presence as I never new they inhabited Canada or these parts. I sent my husband who recently moved here from California, to take a look and excitedly he came to investigate and confirmed that our little neighbourhood night-time visitor is indeed a Possum.

Hamilton Mountain, south of Mohawk, Lawson Park area. Put our dog out last night and she started to bark and do a dance beside the backyard fence.
I got the flashlight out to see what was going on, and to my surprise saw a cat-sized Possum sitting atop the fence. I went over to get the dog away and the possum did not move, I got a broom handle and tried to encourage it to move on. It held on tight and would not move. No sound and no bearing of teeth, which I thought strange. I let the dog out later and it had gone from its perch. Upon checking the several websites I see that they are not ferocious, although they could become a pest. I guess the mild wet day brought it out from its cover.

What a thrill this morning!! About 11 am, I noticed from his body language that our indoor cat Butternuts had spotted something unusual in the back yard!! He was right!! On the flagstone patio was a huge, two-tone (grey on the bottom, White on top), very plump possum about the size of a middle-sized raccoon, voraciously eating bird seed that had fallen onto the ground from our bird feeder, thanks to the backyard squirrels. It then took a long drink from a bird bath I had recently filled with fresh water, and ambled towards the hedge at the front of the house. Unfortunately, my camera was not within reach, but it is ready now in the event of return!! This possum was much larger than two others who came to visit a couple of years ago. Unlike raccoons, which can be testy, possums are gentle creatures so there is no need to fear them.

Likes cat food and he appears to be at ease with me around. I shot a little movie while he was eating. Cats tolerate him well.

It is quite special to have this marsupial in Canada, I wonder how they survive our winters?

Well, Luminita, many of them do survive our winters, but some don't - they are an animal more suited to warmer conditions, however, all across Southern Ontario there are little families of these little fellas!

First Possum sighting in Etobicoke was 2002
by: Anonymous

The very first time that I sighted a Possum was in 2002. It was 9:30 pm. I was closing my bedroom window & noticed a hissing sound outside. I looked out the window and on the sidewalk was this strange looking animal.

I was not sure what it was at first. I called my 9 year old son to come have a look. The Possum crossed the street down my neighbour's driveway & all I could see was this pointed Face(very much like a large rat appearance), skinny tail & ferocious teeth & eyes.

I've since noticed at least 2 more sightings.
Last night, There was a lot of commotion outside, it was a Raccoon and a Possum fighting with each other by my Maple tree. This morning there were a few broken small branches on the street. Not sure who won the fight.

Raccoons climb trees, but I do not know if Possum's can also climb.

It was bigger then my cats, gray, long skinny tail and pointed nose.

Still can't believe I saw this , I'm glad I was inside looking out as I would have been very scared lol.

Possum Sightings South Ajax
by: Anonymous

I live South Ajax in a very suburban / residential area.

I discovered dozens of strange holes randomly dug up in my front yard a few days ago..... last night I found out what it was.

A pretty big Possum sniffing around, destroying my lawn.

Never seen one before. I thought it was a Raccoon at first, but nope, definitely a Possum.

I wonder what it was looking for..... it only destroyed my lawn.

All the neighbors lawns were fine. smh

It may be looking for grubs or something it's hoping to find in your lawn!

Possum sighting
by: Anonymous

February 20, 2012

Saw a Possum on my back deck this evening at dinner hour. Threw a snowball at it.

Moved very slowly.

I have a ravine lot with l 1/2 hour area.

Didn't like the look of it.

My cats didn't seem to be too disturbed about it though.

It doesn't appear very nice looking.

Like a giant rat.

Possum in Pickering Ontario
by: Anonymous

Hi, we live in Pickering, just east of the Rouge and just saw our first Possum last night in our yard.

Wasn't sure at first if it was a local Raccoon till it turned around and I saw its face.

We never know what we will see in our yard so this was a real treat.

2 Possums sighted June 10, 2011 Toronto
by: Ann Kavanagh

Walking my dog around 12:10am I spotted two of these beautiful creatures in the area of Mt. Pleasant Road and Manor Road, Toronto.

I am sure they were Mum and her offspring, and of course, no camera with me!

I was totally amazed I could not believe what I had seen, I had to check on the web I really saw Possums in Toronto!

Tonight's walk I shall take my camera with me.

Possum in our yard
by: Harry

Harry, aged 4, told me there was a 'strange animal' in our yard. I thought he was pulling my leg until he took my hand and brought me to the window and there was a very white (with some black markings) long nosed animal.

My daughter, Lucy (8) correctly identified it as a Possum.

Very excited, but wonder where it has made its home.

They often live under decks or porches - we once had one living under our concrete front steps for the winter!

Sighting
by: Dave Vose

I live in South Ajax, Ontario, an urban area.

I saw a Possum this a.m. across the street. Grabbed my digital camera and ended up cornering him between a solid fence and garage of my neighbour.

Got some good photos as He (or She) decided to freeze motionless. Lasted for about 20 seconds then when I moved He made his getaway.

Showed photos to two 35 year local residents and its the first possum sighting they knew about.
