Possible Wolf - Oakville area?

by Rose
(Oakville, Ontario, Canada)

December 28th 2010 at around 3:30 pm - I spotted an animal (I thought was possibly a Coyote at first) in my back yard. It was quite close to the house at first – I went outside and yelled at it to move on. My dog (a black labrador) came out on the deck as well and started growling and barking at it.

The animal did not look the least bit bothered by us, but moved a little further into the woods.

My lab is about 80lbs and this animal must have been at least twice her size. I managed to take some pictures, but after showing the pictures to people they questioned what the the animal might be, and thought it looked more like a Wolf.

I know for sure there is a Coyote pack in the woods behind us, although we have not seen or heard them in the past 2 or so months.

I love taking walks with my dog back there, but Wolves make me a little bit more uneasy.

The woods in question are called “Fourteen Mile Creek Lands“ and are located near Bronte Provincial Park in Oakville.

The picture attached is not great, but it is something.

Thank-you.

Thank you so much for this report of your sighting - I can see the animal in the middle of your photograph - and I must say that it sure looks like a Wolf, although that would be unlikely in Oakville - but who knows! Maybe other readers will have spotted the same animal, and perhaps we will get another email!

Brontë Park

We were hiking in Brontë Park on weekend, on the way back around 9:00 pm we heard loud howling and then saw a large animal cross the road, few minutes later we saw another one, they looked much larger than Coyotes. Very beautiful and healthy. We took video. I’ve seen Coyotes before, but those looked more like Wolves.

Saw a mangy looking wolf yesterday at Bronte Provincial park on the old Roller Blade trail now Maidens Blush. It was sitting on the path, scratching itself and when it saw us it simply stared at us for about 30 seconds and then went into the woods.

We saw thee large grey wolves sauntering down the middle of Sandwell Avenue last night. They continued onto the adjoining street. It was 9pm and rainy but what a magnificent sight to see, these large animals "sauntering" under the street lamps. They certainly were not minding the rain.

Black coyote or wolf at Bronte Park Oakville
by: Ana

Right now, May 19, 2019, I am at Bronte Park in Oakville / Burlington researching about a animal I just spotted at the Lookout Ravine Trail, and I first thought was a coyote. It is big and black and, after running to a safer site, I start googling because I never saw a black coyote. I found this blog and after reading it I start to think if the animal is actually a wolf. I saw the animal in the ravine and I stopped for a moment to look at it at a fair distance. The animal quickly made eye contact with me and walked in my direction. I didn't take any pictures because safety first! But be careful when walking at Bronte. Keep kids, pets and yourself safe.

I live in the Colonel William and Dundas area of Oakville and see coyotes and foxes in a regular basis but today I saw my first wolf - it was much larger and healthier looking than the coyotes. Als, I hear them howling at night. Beautiful animal - when I tried to go out to take a pic it ran off.

Wolf on Bridge Road

Today I saw a Wolf walk right in front of my car by Fourteen Mile Creek. It was greyish-white and mangy looking. The tail was nothing like a Coyote's which I have seen dozens of times on Warminster Drive. The Wolf was about 4 feet tall and the teeth, snout was crazy. It was completely fearless, not like Coyotes. It must’ve been over 200 pounds, and I think they're scaring the Coyotes away because I have seen a lot of them just in the last few weeks, which is not normal.

Wolf Sighting By Joshua Creek
by: Anonymous

I was driving back home with my kids from an appointment. It was around 6:00 pm and pitch dark. An animal jumped right in front of my car (Joshua Creek east) and I pressed the brake for fear of hitting it. I shouted "look, a Coyote!" for my daughters to check as the animal stopped and looked back at the car. But I took a long look and noticed how tall it was with a light grey coat and white long legs. I don't know why i didn't have the presence of mind to take a picture! I looked around and there was no one here, it wasn't a dog, and not a Coyote either. The animal slowly started walking towards the woods as we drove away. The next morning, I saw a jogger entering the trail and had goose bumps thinking the animal could still be in the area.

wolves (wolf) definitely reside in Oakville.
by: Anonymous

Hi folks. I lived in Oakville from 2005 to 2008. In late spring/early summer of 2007, I was walking my Brittany Spaniel and my friend's Beagle at the park on Upper Middle Road, West of Third Line Rd (sorry I forget the name of the park). It was about 6:00 am. When I got into the middle of the park near the first soccer field on the West side near the woods, a large canine-type animal came out of the woods within 10 to 15 metres of us. It was sizing us up. It was definitely a wolf. It was grey and taller than waist-height (I'm 6'2" tall). I thought, what the hell am I doing 30 feet away from a friggin wolf in Oakville? I yelled as loud as I could and the dogs barked frantically as well. The wolf sauntered back into the woods from where it came. As we took off back to our home across the street, I saw that the wolf was still watching us from the woods. I told people and they didn't believe me. No doubt it was a wolf and the other testimonies here confirm the same. Thanks.

I was walking my dog at around 6:30 am and saw a 2 dog-like animals - one was significantly larger than the other and was chasing it. At first I dismissed it as two Coyotes but they came running back really close in front of me and I was confident it wasn't a Coyote. This was close to Bronte creek.

I left early this morning on a road trip at around 4:30 am. A Wolf approximately 100 lbs or more runs out in front of my car towards golf course. I have seen Coyotes before and this was way too large, as well as looked quite different. It was totally unfazed by car. Scary stuff especially if you into early morning jogs.

Wolf Sighting on Upper Middle
by: Anonymous

I was out for my morning jog this morning at about 6:00 am, running on Upper Middle Drive between Burloak and Appleby Line (very close to Bronte Provincial park). As I was jogging an animal, closely resembling a large husky, ran out of the natural area behind the Times Square condo, crossed Upper Middle, and ran into the farmer's field across the street. Although the animal resembled a very large grey husky, it ran more like a deer. I must have startled it with my LED running lights but it didn't stop to look at me at all - it just bolted across the street. I could hear its long nails scratching on the pavement as it crossed the road. Awesome to see, but a little unsettling.

On April 21st I was driving down Upper Middle just west of 9th line (by the old golf course) and saw a large Wolf. It was for sure not a Coyote because of its size. It crossed the street right in front of me going into the field across the street. Quite scary ... I walk my dogs around there.

Wolf between Neyagawa and Bronte (407)
by:

Today I was inside the Go Bus (the bus was using the Hwy 407) and I spotted a wolf between Neyagawa and Bronte Road. The wolf was walking near the fence, the area was full of trees, he was walking slowly so I was able to have good look at him. The wolf was big and has nice gray and white shade. I don’t mind - the wolf is living its life, but after I read the stores here I felt scared driving alone at night or walking.

Wolf tracks?
by: John Scheel

On Sunday, February 2, 2014, 10:00 am, I was at the garden centre at Dundas and 9th Line. It had snowed overnight and the property was covered in new snow. I found a track of a very large animal which wandered systematically through the entire back of the property. The individual prints were 3.5" wide and almost 5" long. Claw marks were very visible. A single stride (4 footprints) measured between 8 and 9 feet. The animal had not been running. I compared my photos of the tracks to wolf tracks (government web site) and can only conclude that they came from a wolf. I have taken many photos of local coyotes and followed their tracks for years but have never come across such large tracks. Look in the Dundas/9th Line/Highway 403/Upper Middle quadrant and post any sightings. Carry a camera and post your photos. JS

Wolf in Sixteen Mile Creeks woods
by: Anonymous

I wrote the previous comment and must add that last night I woke up at 4:45 am to what seemed like cries but realized it was outside of the house. Then I came to my senses and realized it was some kind of yapping further back in the woods behind the house. And it was followed by a long howl. It was most definitely a Wolf howling at night. I counted 3 long howls. Now I will think twice before going for a walk in those woods as Wolves make me uneasy as well - as much as Coyotes.

Wolf on the 407

Our daughter was sick was having a bad night so we took her in a car drive in the middle of the night around 3:00 am. As we hoped on the 407 and Neyagawa a huge Wolf jumped over the highway fence and ran across. We really had time to see him and it was not a Coyote. Way larger and grey and white. I decided to google it to see if anyone else had seen a Wolf around the Oakville area and found your site.

Hi - I live in Bronte and I woke up to what I'm quite certain were two wolves by the front of my house. They were very large and greyish white. Once they left I took a look at the paw prints and they are much too large for me to believe those were coyotes. I am actually scared as I have a little puppy and do not want him to go out anymore.

Beautiful Animal
by: Mary Ellen

Was driving to work 2 weeks ago at 06:00 and saw what I thought to be a Wolf cross Trafalgar Road at Cornwall. I have seen a few Coyotes around here because it is on 16 Mile Creek. Lots of wildlife in fact. But this animal was larger and had a beautiful grey and white coat. About the size of a small Shepard. I was about 12 feet away from it. It was a bit timid as I drove by. I have also seen a very large dark grey animal cross a farmer's field north of Dundas Road at Trafalgar. That was about 6 years ago.

Bronte - Rebecca & Mississaga Street
by: Anonymous

I was walking my dog through the trails between Westbrook Park and Rebecca Street when a Grey Wolf raced out of the woods along the fence line (backing onto Swansea), crossed Mississauga Street to the West side and was frantically searching for what I believe to have been my bichon-poodle. It darted in and out between 2-3 homes at the North end of Mississauga Street on the West side, before cutting back across and retreating back into the woods. Very large, I would estimate it was 100+ lbs - mixed brown, black, light colouring with some dark on the back and legs. Very healthy looking, strong and agile, running super fast!

I was a skeptic
by: Anonymous

I just received a phone call from my Dad who was driving near Bronte Creek.

He said he is certain he saw a Wolf. Initially he thought it was a Coyote, but he said it was too large to be a Coyote and had a dark grey coat.

I thought he was crazy, but after finding this site I am convinced there is a Wolf in that area.

I knew a guy who, along with a few other friends, saw a Mountain Lion near Lake Erie. He spoke with some sorta expert on this, and was told it is very possible that he did see one, but it would likely be a pet which was released.

I know that Wolves naturally occur in Ontario, but not in the Oakville region.... at least not for the last century.

Maybe someone managed to get their hands on some Wolves and released them into the woods?

Wolves are known to cover great distances, so maybe (although unlikely) some have managed to return to the Oakville area naturally.

I was driving on Cornwall towards Ford with some friends of mine.

One of them being Jeremy, and we all saw a Wolf in between Morrison and Maple Grove, on the right hand side in a parking lot under construction.

The animal had a white/grey coat and was very large.

There was no chance of this animal being a Coyote.

Wolf sighting
by: STB

Last winter (2010) I was driving at 9pm at night heading West on Cornwall Drive (between Ford & Maplegrove) it was quiet and snowing lightly. I have always been a cautious somewhat nervous winter driver so I was only going maybe 40km.
Out of no where and directly under a street light a huge wolf like animal ran across the road in front of my car. It was huge! with a large broad head. It was a beautiful gray & white and most defiantly bigger and taller than any dog I've ever seen. At the time I did a quick search online and must have missed this site because everything I read seemed to suggest that a wolf in this area was next to impossible.
I'm glad I found this because my first thought was that this was indeed a Wolf and no one including my husband believed that it could possibly be.
Looks like maybe I was right :)
I feel lucky I got to see such a beautiful animal.

Wolf or Coyote Sighting
by: Heather

I was running today along Upper Middle just east of Third Line around 10:15am, and a Wolf crossed in front of me, crossed Third Line, stopped at the top of a little hill, looked around as if he was afraid of absolutely nothing and entered some houses' backyards.

He was huge, there was no mistaking that this was a Coyote. Scared the crap out of me, especially when he looked right at me.

Cars slowed down and if he had started towards me I would have jumped in someone's car. Lol!

2 wolves - in Bronte park
by: Brian

I mountain bike in Bronte park 4-5 days a week in the summer. I've seen everything in there over the last couple years. I saw 3 full size deer on a walking path 3 weeks ago.

But Saturday about 8pm, I was heading down one of the main paths, and saw what I thought was a grey and white dog (looked like a husky with shorter hair). I slowed down, but kept going towards it.

It darted off the path. Definitely bigger than a coyote, and didn't have the rough look coyotes have, or the wide drawn head/skull. As I went by, it was in an open field with another similar sized one ahead of it moving off. This one had turned in a defensive stance, and stared right at me as I kept riding.

Everyone I mentioned it to somewhat questions the possibility, but this thread makes alot of sense, especially there being 2 together.

Interesting!

It sure makes you wonder, eh!

Where do they live?
by: Dan

My wife and son saw two Wolves crossing Pilgrams Way the other day in the green space running north from the North Service Road between Birkshire Court and Potters Wheel Crescent.

My feeling is that they are using the green space running behind the industries on the North service Rd "India Ridge Trail" running up into "McCraney Creek Trail".

These Wolves are definitely here!

Checkout the aerial view, using this link to a Map and typing in "McCraney Creek Trail, Oakville" in the text box, and you can see how they could easily be moving around Glenn Abbey mostly undetected.

Wolf sighting in Bronte Creek Park

My fiancé and I were walking our two dogs at Bronte Park, and ahead of us I saw what I thought was a deer who jumped out of the woods across the path and into the woods on the other side.

Seconds later a large animal came out of the woods and stopped on the path when he saw us.

It was way too big to be a Coyote and looked just like a Wolf.

He (or she) turned around and retreated back to the woods.

It was pretty amazing to see!

The animal was heading NW to the area where Indian Ridge Trail joins Montrose Abbey Park.

I had a clear sight of the animal from my car for almost 10 seconds and would describe it as a typical Grey Wolf (canis lupus).
