July 17th, 2021 approx. 11:30 pm I was driving home and spotted a massive cat gliding across highway 55 (Niagara Stone Road) between two wooded areas next to vineyards close to the Virgil round-about.
It was low to the ground and lean with a long thin tail. I am certain beyond a shadow of a doubt that this was not a Coyote because a pronounced snout was not visible and it was taking long strides, just like a feline.
It had a tan coat and pale underside. I saw it for less than ten seconds as it emerged from the woods on my right and crossed through my headlights before disappearing into the woods on the opposite side of the road.
I have heard rumors of Cougar sightings and understand (from what I have read) that the MNR has confirmed that Cougars are in southern Ontario.
I am extremely skeptical but I immediately called my girlfriend who had a similar experience on Taylor Road several years ago. She described almost the same situation, but the creature she observed was moving at a slower pace.
I have heard of sightings on East and West Line and Line 4 from members of the community and a former coworker called in a sighting in her backyard and was told that she would likely never see the cat again as they typically roam over large distances.
After tonight's events I can say that I am fully convinced that Cougars have a presence in the Niagara area.
