Locking Talons in Freefall

by Ted
(Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

20th February 2013 - Three large birds, could be Hawks, soaring above my house in the area of Manor Road and Yonge Street.

Around lunch time, two of them locked talons and fell for a while, then soared and repeated doing this free fall.

Does anyone know the species?

Hi Ted, thanks for writing to us. I do know that Bald Eagles do this behaviour, and I think Red Tailed Hawks also. It could be part of their mating ritual, because it is at this time of year.

Maybe one of our readers will know.

If you know what kind of bird this might be, please write and let us know.

Thanks!

UPDATE: I just found a site you might find interesting The Bird Forum which has information on this behaviour.
