Coyotes In The City - South Oshawa

by DeeSolo
(Oshawa, Ontario, Canada)

Tonight at approximately 10 pm my son left to go to Rays' Smoke Shop, which is located at the end of our street on the west side of Simcoe Street, just south of Ritson Road.

As he was crossing Simcoe Street, he saw three Coyotes sniffing around the Chip truck that is parked at the edge of the parking lot.

The truck is a popular fixture at the edge of the plaza housing Ray's Smoke Shop, a Tattoo parlor, Martial Arts Studio and an Auto Repair Shop.

This is a well populated area that remains quite busy with traffic as it is a direct route to Lakeview Park.

About 5 weeks ago I had tracks of a large dog just steps from my door (no human footprints at all) which is suspect, because the tracks did not come from the driveway or the sidewalk but from the alley separating the houses.

It makes sense because that's where we store the garbage bins.

I have been hearing them yelping since Spring 2010 and when one starts, a number of others chime in.

There have been many sightings at dusk very close to Lakeview Park and in the ravine areas surrounding it.

They are getting very brave and I caution people in this area to be very careful when out with their dogs or taking an evening walk.

I know that I won't be running out for my chocolate fix after dark at all anymore!

If anyone else has seen or heard Coyotes in south Oshawa please share your story.

Yes, the Coyotes are getting very bold, and are moving more and more, into urban areas.

Thanks for telling us about your sightings.

Very Active Coyote Hunting Lakeview Park Last Winter
by: Anonymous

Last winter I was able to take some photos of a beautiful blonde coyote in Lakeview Park by the harbour. Sent photos to the city and mayor to get up warning signs. In Vancouver they have shut down parks and green areas because of coyote attacks. They don't seem to care if your small dog is beside you or on a leash. As more move into Oshawa and get comfortable with us we may be facing the same problems as Vancouver. They are an invasive species that has moved north and east as we have had a negative effect on our eco system

You can see them walking through the park and surrounding areas throughout the day. No longer walk my dog down in that area because they will literally cross the road and approach. Spoke to a couple of people who live in the area and they are both frustrated and concerned at how bold these animals have become.

Possible Coyote Killing of Dog Last night
by: Anonymous

At approximately 11 pm last night we heard the dreadful wails of an animal in distress possibly a dog being attacked by a very vocal pack of coyotes or possibly coyote/wolf hybrid version. This was in north Oshawa in the field that borders between Badgley Drive and Townline Road. Other neighbours in area have seen coyotes travelling through the neighbourhood at night - they are approximately the size of a dog and about 60 lbs in weight.

Three nights ago I spotted two coyotes cross Park Road South directly across from the GM plant, they both walked into the grassy area behind he homes on Fenelon and the salvage yard. Last night one lone coyote approached myself and my dog at Fenelon Crescent park right on the basketball court. I had no idea just how dangerous these animals are. I may skip the late evening dog walks for the next little while

Sunday December 9th, one large coyote came out from the woods at 2 pm and walked across the street and walked down Outlet Drive on the sidewalk like he owned it. As soon as it got dark, about 5 pm another smaller coyote came across the street also. I have seen 3 quite often recently but this was in the middle of the day, they are getting very brave.

Sightings this year.

Lone Coyote - March 23rd (dusk) from inside the house.
Lone Coy-wolf - September 26th(dusk) from inside the house
Pack of Coyotes - September 27th (night) seen from inside
Lone Coyote - Oct 10th (morning) seen from inside the house
Lone Coyote - Oct 10th (afternoon) crossed backyard while I was mowing the lawn. Yelled at it. He ran away.
Lone Coyote - Oct 10th (Dusk) crossed backyard again while I was doing yard work. Yelled again and it ran away.

In all cases the Coyote was moving to another location and didn't stay in the yard long. Today I hazed (yelled and moved towards smacking hands) the one as he came into the yard when I was there. Don't want to encourage that. Both times he ran away.

We have a greenbelt right behind us and for the past week almost every night now we have been hearing the yelps/howling of coyotes. Please keep vigilant when you are outside, teach your children what do if they ever encounter them, and keep your pets close. Coyotes are beautiful and very important to our ecosystem. They play a critical role in keeping natural areas healthy.

Im just wondering if anyone has actually seen them walking around on the streets like: Overbank, Sagebrush, Castlegrove??

To the person who thinks Coyotes are not dangerous
by: Not ignorant. :-).

They are wild animals and they are dangerous. I bet this poor dead girl who got killed by coyote would disagree with you about no known instance of people being killed. Here is a link to the news article Toronto Singer Killed by Coyotes

Hi there - I think the commenter below has a good point - even though there was a fatal attack on a young woman in Nova Scotia, over all there are more people attacked and/or killed by domestic dogs. For example, according to Stats Can, there were over 1,200 attacks on humans by domestic dogs in 1996, and according to the Winnipeg Free Press , dogs kill one person each year in Canada. With this in mind, I think it is out of proportion for people to be terrified of Coyotes, which isn't to say that caution should not be taken with small children and pets.

People need to get educated
by: Anonymous

I am sick and tired of constantly reading and hearing about how "scary" and "horrible" Coyotes are. They are trying to survive in a world where people have taken over their territory. There are no known instances of Coyotes killing or hurting a full grown adult (a child or something small is always going to be seen as "prey"). People need to educate themselves about this amazing creature that just wants to find food to eat and to survive. If you are worried about your little dog or cat, then keep your cat indoors and your dog supervised and on a leash!!

Coyotes in South Oshawa
by: Anonymous

I saw a very large Coyote a couple years ago on Oxford and Mill Street coming up from the Oshawa Creek path. Before that I lived in north Whitby and there I encountered numerous Coyotes at the Thickson and Taunton area coming out from the corn field. Its a combination of a larger species (Coywolves) pushing the common Coyote further south, and loss of habitat, as more rural areas become urbanized. They will follow safe paths like creeks, cornfields, and hydro corridors to travel further into the city, but like any dog, can travel a vast amount of distance in a night so they may be found far outside of those regions. Coyotes will eat almost anything so pets, garbage even corn and fruit trees can be an attractant to them.

I also saw one last year at Ontario Shores closer to the west end of the grounds where the fenced in area is, but on Sunday November 15th is was the east end of the grounds right near the dirt road that leads to the beach. I have never seen more than one at a time. Are Coyotes pack animals ? Are coy-wolves ?

by: Anonymous

There is Coyote scat along the shore by the hospital (looks like dog dropping but is full of fur - probably rabbit) and two weekends ago while walking my dog between the baseball diamond and the school, he started frantically sniffing the ground in an 8 foot radius, then tried to pull me towards the soccer fields. I made him continue in the direction I wanted to go and I almost walked on a small pile of intestines and some other inner organ. No fur, no bones, just a bit of guts. I'm pretty certain he had discovered the scent of the kill. I'm afraid to walk him after dark now!

I was walking my dog around 6:30pm this evening on Farewell Street, just north of Taylor Ave., when I saw a coyote running across the street from Knight's of Columbus Park and into a yard. The coyote was about four houses away from me. I was scared and walked back from where I came from on Taylor Ave. and Guelph St. area. A couple of people in the last two weeks warned me to be careful as there have been coyote sightings down in that park. I have walked my dog there for several years and have never come across a coyote, but will not be walking my dog there anymore, nor will I walk him after dark just to be on the safe side.

There was a Coyote stalking me as I walked through the forest by Parklane St. just off of Harmony Rd at 1:00 am. I heard growling which I ignored, I heard it again clearly a second time so I turned on my light and to my surprise there was a large, slender and scruffy dog not even 20 ft behind me. I ran towards lights coming from a house, jumped the fence separating the woods and the backyard and waited to see if the coyote was still following me, I heard it growl a third time and I exited the backyard to the street.

We turned on our back porch lights and there were two Coyotes 30 feet away. Tried to spook them by yelling and banging, however they seemed not to care.
