Coyotes in Courtice

by Angela
(Courtice, Ontario, Canada)

I was awoken last night at about 2am from howling and yelping of what sounded like a pack of Coyotes.

This went on for a couple hours and at one point was so loud, they sounded to be right on my street.

We hear them quite often, as we live at the northern part of a subdivision, surrounded by forest and farmers' fields. But last night was too creepy for my liking.

Thankfully, I have never seen any, but hear them about once a week, only in the middle of the night.

Coyotes at the Courtice Duck pond
by: Anonymous

I see fresh tracks every morning crossing my back yard. This morning at 6:30 I saw 2 coyotes running back and forth on the path checking out the duck pond. They were there for about 5 minutes before moving on.

Just saw Coyote
by: Anonymous

Just saw Coyote at 12:45 am January 23rd, 2022. He was howling very loud for about 3 minutes then I saw him walk down middle of Blackcreek Trail. It was a good size, bushy and brown/ grey colour. First one we’ve seen since mid 2001 in Adelaide and Wilson area.

Coyotes on Trulls and Adelaide
by: Anonymous

I live on Adelaide and Trulls and hear the pack howl every night. It is unsettling some days just thinking about the numbers that we hear. We do not walk after dark and warn other not to do the same in this area. We have wildlife around us, but it may not be good when we cross over into each other’s space. I love living in Courtice, just have to be careful when it comes to wildlife.

Still going in 2020
by: Anonymous

Not sure if this group is still active. I'm off of Trulls and can hear them every night. Scary as heck sometimes. Especially when they start sounding like crying dogs. I live close to the forest and see a lot of young moms and dog walkers late at night... please be careful!

At 6 am this morning I spotted a coyote in my backyard on Lyndale Crescent, Courtice. First time since living here (20 years). Be careful of letting pets out early mornings.

They were outside my work on Liberty St South in Bowmanville early this morning and the noise was something else, lived here all my life and I never heard that much commotion in my whole life, very unnerving at 3:30 in the morning.

This evening, we saw a Coyote running up the centre on the road on Centrefield, near Hartsfield. We had to slow the truck down, as it wouldn't get off the road. Eventually, it ran between a couple houses on the east side of Centrefield. But this was about 6:30, when most of our neighbourhood is out walking their dogs. Be cautious!

What other animals have you seen?
by: Anonymous

I have lived in north Courtice for 18 yrs and we would always hear Coyotes every night but when they started building behind us we didn't hear them for a number of years but in the last couple of years I have heard them a lot. I have seen them on the side of the 401 between Courtice Rd and Harmony Rd. One night recently a Coyote ran out in front of my car on Olive Avenue at about 1:30 am and just walked up the sidewalk toward Townline Rd. I have had huge raccoons in my backyard this summer and just the other morning on my way to work at 4:30 am I what looked to me like a small white Wolf on Nash Rd. near George Reynolds. I am getting nervous being out in the dark around here now.

Beware: Big Coyote walking down Varcoe in new Jeffery home development
by: Anonymous

We live in the new subdivision at the end of Varcoe Road. My son woke up at 4am on March 31sr 2016, and looked outside and saw a big Coyote slowly running down the road. With all the construction it's suprising. My son was able to video it on his phone.

Beware: coyote sighting
by: Dawn

The last three nights we were awoken to a pack of Coyotes howling. Last night one was at my backyard fence on Centerfield Drive just howling away and I opened the window and he just stared at me, eyes glowing in the dark, it was scary to see one this close to the house. Please keep your pets inside, this was a close encounter, more brazen than ever.

Saw a Coyote run in front of a car a Centrefield and Hartsfield tonight. It went into the greenbelt space behind Hartsfield. Our yard backs into it, and we have a small dog, so I'm not letting him out alone for a while. We hear them all the time, but it was our first sighting.

Coyotes in Courtice-Sighting
by: Anonymous

For the last couple of weeks there have been signs posted on our walking route on Geogre Renyolds between Sleeman Square and Jane steet. For dog owners to be extra cautious, we have been, carrying a flashlight and making extra noise. Well tonight around 9:30-9:45 we were walking and saw a Coyote run across the road to the same side of the street as us about 300 ft in front of us. We decided to just turn around and go back the way we came. Watching the Coyote cross back to the other side of the street and then cross back over again, and with a couple of cars going by it was not really phased. After we were almost home we heard what we can only assume was him, making an awful lot of noise, so dog owners skip the walks past the pond and wooded areas.

Coyotes Trulls Road
by: Barry

It is just after 12:00 pm and I'm hearing what sounds like coyotes howling. I have seen one or two when I get off the 401 at Courtice Road coming home about 11:00 pm. I'm at Trulls and Avondale. It sounds like they are in the woods by Trulls and highway 2. I think I will skip the late night dog walk!

Keep your Pets inside at night

My brothers little dog who he just loved to death was killed by a coyote pack on June 21 2014. My brother was only about 20 yards away when his dog took off towards the field fence and all he heard was a horrific scream as they grabbed his little dog and ran away with it...small snack for a pack but my brother was devastated. That's between Hwy#2 and Bloor street on the 13th line. They're getting freaking close and fearless.

Too Close For Comfort
by: Anonymous

We live down at the lake in Bowmanville, Ontario, and at 4 in the morning we were woken to the screaming, barking and howling of the Coyotes. This is the closest I have heard them to the houses down here. I am scared to let my little dog out for a pee now. Something has to be done about these animals they are getting too close for comfort. We are animal lovers but I think the numbers are getting larger.

Coyotes
by: anon

Almost every night I hear the coyotes, it sounds like they are in the fields on the west side of Courtice Road. It seems that one will howl and the rest will slowly follow until it sounds like a big group of whining/screaming dogs. I live right beside Courtice Road and hear them all the time. It seems as though they are increasing in numbers as it has gotten louder and more frequent of the past year.

I live with my girlfriend and our medium sized hunting dog. We often times hear coyotes yipping down by the train tracks at night. It usually happens when a train is going by. I also learned from my sister who lives on Townline that she had a run-in with one while with my 4 year old nephew and 2 year old niece! Yikes. This blog is interesting for me, because as I mentioned, I have a hunting dog... a pointer... But I am also interested in hunting coyote. To do this, I would need access to a farm or farms. This could help with the numbers in the area, but keep in mind, I have no intention in trying to eradicate the population. I am a responsible, ethical and respectful hunter. If anyone reading this knows a farmer who needs help to reduce the population of coyotes on their farm, let me know.

Saw a lone Coyote trotting across the farmers field on Courtice Road, south of Bloor. I thought it was a cougar at first. Too close to family neighborhoods for my liking!

I sleep with my window open in my bedroom. Once a week this month I have awoken to coyotes in the fields here. It is quite alarming, and sounds like screaming and howling. I'm waiting for the sound of a gun shot one night. I wouldn't mind, this is getting scary! There are farms with livestock all around here. There are children and pets. I don't want to hear of someone's beloved pet getting snatched at a park one day.
