A Grey Wolf - Black phase

This item was submitted by one of our readers in the US - thank you Pat!

I thought I would send this to you as some of your readers might be interested and I thought it was pretty rare and neat.

On June 18th 2009, I was travelling back from fishing in Northern Ontario, and was heading south past Wawa (just 15-20 miles before the Canadian Carver store).

I saw a HUGE black wolf in the road - I couldn't believe it ... at first I thought it was a small elk from a distance, which didn't make sense.

It had to be 200 lbs or more, it was HUGE!

It wandered off to the side of the road and then looked back at me before entering the rocks and forest. Really awesome.

Believe it or not I used to see these black wolves in Markham back in the late 1980s. About 15 years ago in Stouffville, Ontario I was driving in a winter storm and a huge black wolf with orange-ish stains on the fur leaped out in front of my car and crossed the whole entire road in two steps . This wolf was long and tall.

Siting in Kawartha Lakes

This morning 6:00am I saw what I though was a large blackish sheppard eating garbage in Valentia, near Lindsay. As soon as it looked at me as I drove past, I knew it was a wolf. My dash cam caught poor images, as the rising sun threw off the quality, but I am positive it was a black wolf.

Black Wolf in GTA
by: Jeff

A couple summers ago I was on my way to work early, around 5:30 am, and I saw a black wolf cross the road ahead of me. It was huge, and like a similar comment on this page, I initially thought it was a horse due to it's size. I also thought I may have been dreaming, apparently not! This was on Tremaine Road just north of Dundas.

Wolf sighting
by: Randy

Trans Canada trail coming up to Orange Corners Road in Omemee, Ontario, I saw a animal approaching us about 400 to 500 feet away. As he he got a little closer he turned so I could see his profile and he looked like a German Shepherd but way bigger than anything I have ever seen before. This happened in the middle of the afternoon on may 27 2020.

Black Wolf

I was biking in a remote bush area near Wingham Ontario. Just after going through a "No winter maintenance" back road (Kings Road x Turnberry Culross Road) in heavy bush area I saw a black Wolf looking at me. At first I thought it was a miniature horse and then I looked closer and thought it was a big German Shepherd. When it turned and looked at me I saw it was a wolf! I biked quickly away and found pictures online of a black wolf and it looked just the same! Earlier this Spring our family also saw a similar animal walking up the hills in a quiet lonely area.

Black Wolf

Hi. I was travelling the Hwy near Wawa, Ontario, on July 27th 2014 when we encountered a black Wolf which was struggling to cross the road as he only had 3 legs (his right front leg was partially amputated - it seemed to be a fairly recent injury, perhaps from trapping? He was huge and it was sad to see this beautiful animal in such distress. He cowered in a ditch while we passed.

Thunder Bay living (Black wolf)
by: Sandra L

I was out for a trail ride with my horse on December 30th and at the end of my trail ride I came upon a Black Wolf that was very healthy in size. It was on a deer path that I had seen cross through, not long before I was up to that point in my ride. The winters here are great and so are the trails. P.S nothing happened, the Wolf just kept on going.
