Wolves in Ottawa

by Anon
(Kanata, Ontario, Canada)

I live in Kanata, Ontario, at the boundary of a wilderness area.

It is pretty common to see Coyotes, but early this morning at 4:00 am I heard a Wolf howl.

The sound is quite different than a Coyote's yipping sounds, very deep and throaty.

I was not aware that we had Wolves in this area, although I have heard of reports in the Kingston area.

Thanks for this report of your hearing the voice of the Wolf - some people report hearing a Wolf howling, but often, they don't realize that what they are hearing is a Coyote, however, you are used to hearing Coyotes, and can tell the difference.

I wonder if any other readers from the Ottawa area have seen or heard Wolves lately? If you have, please write and let us know!

I will also post this on our facebook page.

Coywolves

I think what people are likely seeing are Coywolves, which is a hybrid species of coyotes and wolves inter-breeding. They are often seen in urban areas and have learned to adapt to their environment. They are larger than a coyote, but smaller than a grey wolf.

Pack of Coyotes near Bells Corners
by: Anonymous

While out hiking during the first cold weekend last October, I came across a pack of 4 Coyotes along a NCC trail between Bells Corners and Kanata. One of them was aggressive and came at me directly but luckily I have a heavy duty walking stick that I used to max effect. Yes I was able to scare them off but do worry about others walking with young children. Please be careful folks cause Coyotes in packs are known to attack. Since that incident, I've seen a dozens of coyotes along those trails so now days, I always carry bear stray, just in case.

Coyote in Bridlewood
by: Phil

I often power walk up Bridgestone Drive heading towards the Eva James community center at night during these quiet lockdowns. Over the past month I've had a lone coyote run across the street in front of me 'twice' (from the adjacent gravel parking area) on seperate nights and high tail it down the hydro corridor towards Bridlewood school. It was so close I could hear it's paws making contact with the pavement. I slowed down just enough, didn't freak out and just watched it pass and was thankful it kept going. Felt a bit uneasy since this was a larger alpha and it was just me. I also bike through the trails from Bridlewood to Bells Corners up to Shirley's Bay quite a bit. During my afternoon rides I always wonder how many are out there hidden in plain sight. Yet realize 99% want nothing to do with us. Might be time to pick a different route at night lol.

They are among us
by: Anonymous

Just last week I went out with my cat on my front porch and I couldn't believe what I saw, there were two wildlife creatures walking in the middle of the street as one of them stared at me. I remained still as they both continued going down Melanie Crescent towards McKitrick. I'm not familiar with these type of creatures so I couldn't tell if they were wolves or coyotes. Their fur was leaning more on the grey spectrum and they were larger than a middle size dog. This took place at 3:15AM during the last week of January 2021.

Walked out my front door tonight around 10:30pm to take my dog for a walk. I'm pretty sure what I say walking down the middle of the road (Fairpark drive in Barrhaven) was a grey & white wolf. It was much bigger than a coyote and I'm certain it was not a large dog. My dog started barking so I dragged him back into the house. The wolf turned around and started running back toward Prince of Wales drive.

white/gray wolf/coyote along Ottawa river near Portage bridge?
by: Anonymous

I was taking a walk along the Ottawa river pathway on Gatineau side, between Alexandra and Portage bridges, around 6pm today. Out of the bushes, on the right side of the pathway, what I thought at first was a big dog and seemed to have a blue collar suddenly appeared. I kept walking but also kept looking back, thinking that if this were a dog then the dog owner should appear shortly. No one came. It was just standing there quietly.

I was biking the Watts Creek Pathway yesterday (bordering roads Carling/Herzberg/Corkstown/Moodie - near the 19th Tee driving range area). Around 4pm a large, white wolf leapt across the pathway and into the forest. I thought for a minute it was an off-leash dog but there was no one else in sight for a good stretch of the pathway. I could tell it was a wolf vs. coyote from its size, broad nose, round ears. I've never seen one before so it took me off-guard. Very cool to see!

Wolves howling at 2am Riverside South
by: Riverside Mom

I've been living in Riverside South for 4 years, and I'm used to hearing the coyotes that live behind our house; I also grew up with a huge wilderness area behind our house in Kingston, and infrequently heard them. They do yip short little 'howls' but more yipping and yelping (and sometimes snarling, like they're fighting among themselves) and they frequently came to our back fence at night when I used to let my German Shepherd out for his night pee. But tonight, I definitely heard wolves - one started, and another joined in. It got quiet for a few moments then another gave off the longest howl I've ever heard (used to have a husky and I thought they could let out a long howl, but wow...this went on for so long).Must have been a small pack though, I only heard a few howling together (maybe 5-7?). VERY cool, glad that they're still able to survive all the development that's happened in this area.

What to do when coyote within 30 metres
by: Anonymous

Do not run away from a coyote or wolf. You will look like prey. The best thing to do is BACK away, calmly, keeping eye contact with the animal. Keep your dog close to you, a bit behind you so you look dominant and protective (e.g. I am bigger than you and this dog is in MY pack). Do not turn your back to the animal.
The animal should view you as a predator so you must stand your ground and make sure the animal has moved away from you before you can start walking back to your car, home, etc.

Yesterday my son and I were driving north on Greenbank through the greenbelt at 10:30am and we both saw what I think is a wolf on the east side. It was trotting away from us looking around. It was very big and grey which leads me to believe it was not a dog, fox or coyote but I am no expert-wondering if anybody else has seen it. We often see turkeys and deer which would be nice meals for a wolf.

I live in Avalon , just off of Aquaview and esprit ,and my oh my have I seen a lot of coyotes this year . I tend to go to the ODR often late night to play a bit of hockey around 3-5 am . I’ve seen a family of them a several times wondering around but they would always be far in the distance in the fields so I never really cared to mind them . But tonight as I was walking back home and I was walking through the path , I saw a HUGE coyote just run across esprit on the sidewalk extremely close to me. Not even ten yards away . Another one came next to the coyote and they just stared at me for quite some time , showing no intimidation . It was my first time being so close to such barbaric animals like such that I panicked and ran for my life . I know that’s not what your suppose to do but my mind reacted so fast that it all happened so quick , they didn’t chase me but they did not stop starring at me either . Just thought I would post this as a heads up to people in the area . I’ve seen them wonder around in broad daylight as well near the fields of scala .

There are one male and one female living on the golf course. The male is as tall as a large German Shepherd and the female is significantly smaller, closer to in size to a Husky. The height difference is about 3" at the shoulder and the weight difference could be as much as 12 lbs, considering that coyotes are lighter than pet dogs of the same height due to their longer and thinner leg bones, and the fact they carry less body fat.

Coyote and probable Wolf on Hunt Club golf course

My leashed dog and i were confronted by a coyote 10 days ago on the golf course at about 4pm, near my home. I stayed on the spot, yelled at it but it kept coming closer until it saw my tall husband running toward me (I had called him and it was that close to our home). Since then, I have seen the coyote but it has kept its distance. However, last night I heard a confrontation between the resident red fox, the coyote and another howling canid. This morning, I saw fox tracks, coyote tracks and much larger tracks - 4-5 inches across - and a long scat containing fur as well as grass - which I picked up. This larger track is new and in my opinion, it is that of a much larger animal than a coyote.

Hello:

It continued down Harmer and turned right onto Ruskin (toward Holland and Parkdale). I sure hope the animal found safety... the busy streets... the morning commute... kids going to school... I contacted 311 and then the MNR. Nothing could be done, but I just wanted to alert someone. The animal looked strong and like it had sufficient weight and it was not acting bizarre or strange (so a wildlife rehabilitator did not need to be contacted), but I hope it's okay. What a beautiful sight on this beautiful morning!

We had been quiet and there was no one else in the bush at the time. At first I don't think it saw us but after it entered the woods it started glancing over its shoulder just before it entered some thick bush.

It was very big for a coyote but can't imagine a wolf in that close. Still its a big area?

Today, around 1:30 pm, my wife and I saw two large coyotes or wolves on the north side of the George Etienne Cartier Parkway, just west of the Aviation Museum. We pulled over, parked and watched them for a few minutes. I got a few not-great pictures on my cell phone (I can share them with you, if you want). They were strolling along in the thick grass, playing a bit, and not at all disturbed by the flow of traffic along the Parkway. I got a good, long look at them from about 50 yards and, in my opinion, they were wolves: too large for coyotes, much bulkier, fairly dark fur, thicker legs, a different stride than I have seen in coyotes. I have seen lots of coyotes in and around Ottawa and these were not coyotes. Maybe coy wolves?

We recently had what was arguably a Wolf cross our back property. There was debate amongst family members as to if it was a Coyote or a Wolf. My 20 yr old son just reported this morning a Wolf crossing the road in front of him in one big leap. He said he was double the size of our 100 pound dog. This is significant to me as he is an animal enthusiast who was adamant that what crossed our back yard was a Coyote - "there are no wolves here". We are surrounded by Coyotes where we live but you can distinguish the howl of the Wolf over the Coyote - it is bone-chilling to me.
I agree, the call of the Wolf and the yipping of the Coyote, are different, and yes, I also find the Wolf call chilling!

I am sure it was not a coyote as I have heard and seen coyotes regularly over the years, and I have never heard that type of vocalisation.

I wish I could have seen the horse's reaction to that howl, but they were all the their stalls and all quiet when I went to get my horse to ride.

Hi, I drive the Aviation Parkway frequently and I have seen coyotes or probably coywolves (wolf/coyote hybrid) at least three times. Last year I clearly saw one capture an unsuspecting groundhog. This July one trotted across the street right in front of my car. Sunday October 6th 2019 was my latest sighting. I saw a young coywolf that appeared to be hunting near the museum at the end of the parkway. It was stalking what I assumed to be a groundhog burrow. Anyway, I wanted to post in order to tell people that these sightings are nothing new and nothing to afraid of. These animals have been here for quite some time and we have not any reports of "attacks" or danger to humans or dogs. Many residents are living in harmony with coywolves unbeknownst to them; biking, walking, driving, jogging right among them! For those of us lucky enough to catch of glimpse of these magnificent creates we are grateful for it.

I believe I saw 2 wolves cross Bearbrook in Blackburn Hamlet area just south of the soccer dome into the field. The smaller one was about the size of a medium shepherd, the larger one was almost twice as big. Looked much larger and fuller than coyotes I have seen.

Wolf feasting
by: Anonymous

Monday December 3 2018 at 3:30pm driving on the Rockcliffe Parkway and almost at Montreal Road, there was an RCMP car stopped on the east side, all lights flashing. It was, I assumed to throw caution to us the drivers that 50 feet from the west side of the street a very large wolf was feasting on a large carcass that might have been a young deer. The wolf was intelligent enough to be facing us on the road while he ate.
Quite impressive.

Coyote sighting at KRC
by: Anonymous

This morning around, November 26 2018 9:30 am I was walking my dog at KRC park in Kanata and I saw a coyote - I think there were 2 of them as the one I saw was quite a distance away which looked more like a husky. As we were making our way back to the car I noticed it across the pond where the gazebo is, walking towards the bush. We hurried along but I sensed something was near us. I kept looking back and as we approached the car I saw one that was quite thin looking it was eating something and stood there for about 10 minutes then ran over to the north side of the park.

Wolves in Ottawa!?

I was driving home on the Aviation Parkway, at around 2:30 pm heading towards Orléans. I had just passed the Aviation Museum when I noticed something crossing the street. At first I thought it was a husky. But I have to husky’s of my own, and when I got closer to it, I realized it definitely was not a husky! It was definitely a Wolf! It was assorted browns in colour and he was big. I thought it so odd that it was just leisurely crossing the road, like it was normal.

Howling in Barrhaven

Last night I’ve heard howling, I’m not sure who was behind that sounds (coyotes or wolves), but it’s a second time I woke up at night at about 3-3:30 am because of howling sound. I live in south Barrhaven, close to Manotick. We just moved to the Ottawa area, and in my childhood I used to hear wolf howling a lot (lived in the are where wolf habitat is).
So really I’m not sure (never heard coyotes before).

Yesterday I was walking my dog where the old military base was at Rockliffe and my dog ran after a wolf. My dog is a 125 lbs Bouvier and the wolf was at least 3-4 inches taller than my dog. He was slim and not afraid of my dog at all. They are building houses there which some people already live in. I’ve seen coyotes, foxes and deer throughout the 4 years but have never seen a wolf. My dog was lucky and so I won’t be going back there again.

Large, sleek, short haired reddish-brown coyote (coywolf?) loped across Greenbank Rd near Cambrian traffic circle July 27. It was around 10 pm and he/she was headed for the large culvert behind the new housing development of Half Moon Bay. We turned around to see if we could catch him/her in our headlights again and sure enough, it loped back over Greenbank and into the large park on the other side of the road. Healthy looking and on a mission ... didn't even look at on-coming traffic, just moved purposefully straight ahead.

I’ve seen what I assume was a wolf or coy wolf (he was big, grey bushy fur and tail stuck out straight behind him) crossing around an underpass on Heron Rd not far from the Canadian Tire just passing Heron Park, in the afternoon in broad daylight in 2013! We were driving in our car around 4 pm and it was surreal in that he successfully crossed 4 lanes of traffic and when he got across to the other side he ran right behind two young boys walking along Heron they didn’t even notice him as he ran up the hill behind them right into the bush he was gone just like that.
Just yesterday driving past the RCMP building on St. Joseph we saw a coy wolf running along the road like he owned the place. It must be the same guy because we’ve seen one cross there a couple of times before right near the fruit stand and the RCMP building on St. Joseph Blvd in Orleans.

Wolves and Coyotes near Kemptville
by: Anonymous

I heard Wolves howling back and forth far away, in the Kemptville area last night. I heard Coyotes on the Thursday before Victoria day weekend, in Kemptville area, as well. The wolves were making long howls and the responses were spaced well apart. The coyotes, on the other hand, just yipped quite rapidly and all at the same time. Very sweet to hear coyotes, and a bit mysterious to hear the wolves. I spotted a coyote off of Bronson, while heading south to Heron, on a late morning last week. I have seen them in Alta Vista too, around 4 am in the winter.

Riverside Drive Hospital Link Road sighting
by: Jan Lou

Healthy, good-sized coyote, nice thick tail, no mange, sighted 3 p.m.-ish 26 April 2018 in the meadow bordered by the new Hospital Link Road and Riverside Drive. I had just seen someone walking a German Shepherd. Moments later, sighted this coyote, same size, on the slope at the southwest corner of Hincks & Riverside. He/she got up from the grass there, trotted south along the ridge in that meadow that can be seen from Riverside Diver at the Lycee Claudel OC Transpo station. I've seen him/her before think he/she comes up from the riverfront at Frobisher. A treat to see. Might also explain absence of rabbits on the west side of Riverside. (they're abundant this year on the east side...) :)

I was walking my standard poodle on the golf course around 5:30 pm on Monday when I noticed a Coyote approaching us, about 300 ft away. Before I had a chance to stop my dog, he ran after the coyote, who ran away. I called my dog back and we both started to walk back toward home. Having taken about 5 steps in snowshoes, I remembered that you should never turn your back on a coyote. So I looked back and noticed that the coyote was now running toward us. My dog ran right up to the coyote and challenged him. I thought I was going to witness a bloody fight but my dog, about the same size as the coyote, stood his ground, circling him, holding his chest, head and tail very high. The coyote backed down after about 20 seconds (which seemed like an eternity to me) and eventually ran back in the direction he had come from. I won't be walking my dog at dusk anymore.

Coywolf near General Hospital

My wife and I went for our regular early evening walk tonight, that crosses the large woodlot that separates the Ottawa General Hospital from Riverview Park. This was February 8th, around 7:30 p.m. and saw a large tawny coloured dog (we thought) and we are 99% sure this was a coywolf. It was standing at the north end of the path that leads from the hospital road to Station Blvd, and it was standing directly under the path-side light. It was about 100 metres away and as we moved toward it, it left the path and ended up travelling west along the hydro corridor. Based on similar look in online images and the fact that there was no dog owner around, we are now pretty sure it was a coywolf. We stared at each other for a couple minutes before he turned and loped away along a X-country ski path that heads toward Alta Vista Drive and the Rideau River. After multiple Google image searches, I am sure that's what it was.

It’s amazing to see all these reports of wolf and coyote airings. Our city truly is a community on the edge of a vast wilderness. It’s amazing to know we’re surrounded by God’s wild creatures. My son and I saw a whole pack of coy-wolves cross the road in front of us at Pleasant Park and Lynda Lane. One stopped at the side of the road and waited for us to continue on. I turned on the high beams to get a good look. It was very large... at least the size of a large male German Shepherd. I’d guesstimate it weighed about 60+ pounds. It was mostly gray with a tinge of rust colour around his neck and ear tips. We’ve seen these canines around the green belt before, but never in a large city suburb. Very cool. Lock up your cats and dogs. They’re definitely on the hunt!

I have contacted the Councillor a number of times to ask if they can trap them & remove the bush before a child gets attacked, but they refuse to remove the bush and do not seem to take this issue seriously. Coywolf?
by: Heather

I was walking my dogs on the trails behind the Sportsplex yesterday and ran into what I think was a Coywolf. It looked like a Coyote but much much larger head and it was just slightly smaller than my setter. Bit of a shock as it followed us for about 5 minutes and stayed about 15' away the whole time. It didn't seem to be bothered by my shouting at it and throwing sticks. I am guessing that there was a den or something nearby as it stayed with us for so long. My only worry was that it would decide to take on my dogs (one very small and potential food, one large and potential aggressive challenger). I phoned the police after I got home (not a complaint, after all I invaded its territory) as I wasn't sure if I should report it. I was told there was no need to report it as there were lots back there and they were generally fine unless cornered. Perhaps the sign saying you can walk dogs on leash should be changed should be changed to no dogs, or at least a warning sign put up.

Thanks for the info - I think warning signs would be a good idea and you may have to approach your municipality and suggest it.

I turned the car around to go back fully expecting to see a dog with the master close behind ... but it was no dog. At first I thought it was a Coyote, but as I stopped the car and rolled down the window it stood there in the snow beside the road looking at us and I wondered if it might be a Wolf, because of the grey, black and white colouring, and the size. We got a good close look at it, but I just don't know my Coyotes, Coywolves and Wolves well enough to identify them. It was quite something for both of us.

I saw a very large wolf-looking animal running through the Kilborn area green space and crossing Kilborn at 8:00 am today. Later inspection of the area showed clear footprints of a large animal running (front and hind prints separated by approx 2 meters), without any accompanying human tracks nearby. It had a mid-gray, very thick tail and dense fur around the neck. If this was a dog, it was huge and it had no owner.

Wolf at Experimental Farm July 22nd, 2016 8pm
by: Anonymous

I believe I saw a Wolf while cycling down National Capital Commission Driveway (between Prince of Wales and Fisher). He was, as the guy in November 2015 (who also saw a wolf at the farm) described, tall, long snout, brownish grayish with hint of red perhaps. He was definitely bigger than a coyote or fox. Bigger than a German Shepherd - certainly far leaner. He ran out from the fields onto the path and when he saw me ran back in again. He looked healthy - just to be sure my eyes didn't deceive me, I cycled down to Ash Lane - looked back and could see him running around the field then back out onto the path. Wolf or Coywolf. Haven't seen the latter but have seen documentaries about them.

Coyote crossing March Road in broad daylight
by: Mike H

On Tuesday, 23 February, 2016, while traveling southbound on March Road just past the intersection with Herzburg Road, I saw a Coyote crossing March Road, trotting from the open NCC land into the Beaverbrook neighborhood. It looks like a scruffy looking German Shepherd with very long legs. It is very at ease moving around, not rushing, with no attempt to hide. Looking back to the open field towards the Nepean Campground side, I saw yet another Coyote, bigger than the first one, frolicking in the snow. This reminds me of the blood stain in the snow and whatever was left in the deer carcass we saw while snowshoeing in the hills near the Nepean Campground a few years ago.

I too can confirm having seen a Coy Wolf mix along the Nepean Creek trail on January 17th. It was just before 6 pm and I was headed back eastwards towards CitiPlace Drive. It was about 10 yards or so ahead of me (close to the Nepean Pond Park) and I first thought it might be a grey-coloured husky belonging to someone, but there was no one around and the Coy Wolf just vanished back into the bush along the creek. And today, January 23rd around 5 pm, I saw the remains of what might have been a rabbit along that very path in that area. Seems it may well still be around! Lone wolf - Beaverbrook/Tiffany Crescent
by: Goldthorp

At 10:30 pm, December 7th I encountered a lone Wolf on the 4th hole of Kanata Lakes Golf course near the path intersection of Tiffany Crescent. I was walking my two senior dogs. My Newfoundland was sniffing more than usual on our walk and he was wary the entire time we were on the path. He was the one that alerted me to it and he started to lope after it. It was really dark and I couldn't tell what he was chasing. I caught up to him when the Wolf came out of the trees and stopped. I yelled at the Wolf but he had no intention of leaving and was eyeing up my old dog that was lagging behind. I stood my ground and walked towards my older dog and tried to look very big and continued to yell at him. Fortunately, we were close to home and I called my husband who came running to us and we backed down the path to the lit street. He was very tall, lean and leggy and very dog-looking so I am pretty sure it was a Wolf and not a Coyote. I have seen both. This animal was beautiful and I am happy to see that we have a striving habitat/neighborhood but I would rather not have lone encounters in the pitch of night.

I was walking with my dog, 9:30 am, and was almost back to Parking Lot 3, when a Coyote or Wolf (looked bigger than any Coyote I have seen) came out of the woods onto trail. I backed away and shouted, it didn't move, in fact straightened out so it was facing me head-on instead of sideways). When I got out of sight I ran, then looked back, it was following us. I ran further, shouted for help, each time I looked back, it was at a new place on the path, following, but not getting any closer. I met up with a man and his dog, together we took the high trail to the park, then back to the parking lot, with no sign of him. I didn't think Coyotes followed humans, but upon looking it up later, it would seem it might have been curious about my dog. Next time the pepper spray comes with me!

A white long full nose similar to a dog snout, too big for a coyote. It's coat was gorgeous. I almost hit it! The animal was taller than the front of my little car. It never looked at me, just had its eye on the corn field and dove into it like water and disappeared! Mystical!

I have heard coyotes yipping in the fields near my house in Orleans (10th Line & Brian Coburn area) and a neighbour saw a coyote which had been circling a teen walking his dog for about 15 minutes. There were other sightings, too. Easter weekend, I found a rabbit skull in my backyard and a few days later we found the feet and lots of fur in my next door neighbour 's yard, about 15 ft from her back door. This is a community where the bungalows are close together ( 1 metre) and the back yards are only about 20 ft to the fence. My neighbour had seen what she assumed were dog paw prints in the snow .i was shocked that the animal is so bold to come in a densely populated area like this. You may be interested in knowing that a DNA study of the Eastern coyote, shows that it is a hybrid of the western coyote and Eastern wolf, more aptly named a Coywolf, according to naturalists.

Once he saw my dog, he started to track towards us, probably interested in a 'dog breakfast'. He came within about 100 m as I moved back to the barn. Luckily I have a well trained dog who remained off leash and close to heel, but I have no doubt that the Wolf would have attacked her given the opportunity. Notwithstanding the risk, he was a beautiful sight, predominantly grey fur, with a white blaze and muzzle - he stayed around for about 10 minutes then moved off into the woods.

Wolf Attacked my dog

End of October 2013 behind the Steeple hill Church area. My Dog was attacked by a grey wolf. It was HUGE! Not brown and not a coyote. My friend and I were walking with three other large dogs off leash in the woods. The dog it attack was trailing behind and also deaf so it must have senses her weakness. Took her from the rear end (she weighs about 60 lbs and is a Bull terrier /Staffordshire terrier cross) the Wolf kept fighting for her but once it made eye contact with us it slowly trotted away. The other dogs who normally are very reactive to commotion just stood still (as if they knew they didn't stand a chance) I called NCC and the police right away and neither of them seemed to believe me. It was so close to the baseball diamond and it could have been a child. I work in the animal business and so does my friend that was with me, grey not brown, extremely tall legs, super deep chest, about the height of a Great Pyrenees but slimmer obviously ... This was no Coyote and it was less than 20 ft from us.

I have of knowledge of these animals and have tracked them in winter, Wolves included, in remote areas far from here, and even they don't want anything to do with us, period. Everyone is probably seeing a Coywolf - half Coyote half Wolf. They are bigger than a coyote and smaller than a wolf with a face more like a coyote - very sharp nose but fur like a wolf - grey, black and brown.
There is one that hangs out in the Bridlewood area of Kanata. Very healthy looking - he and my idiotic lab/gold retriever decided to play together last Tuesday. Sam weighs 85 lbs and this guy was smaller at about 65 - 70 lbs. I had seen him before on the trails I run - he is not very scared of humans. He and Sam chased each other across the soccer fields off Bridgestone Road in Deevy Pine Park. Actually playing. I called Sam frantically and he came trotting back with the Coywolf trailing behind. Put Sam back on the leash and backed away shouting uselessly at the Coywolf. It was 9:30 at night and there wasn't another soul around. But he eventually just went back into the bush that surrounds the park - ambled off actually. I am sure that he hunts in the greenbelt that surrounds Ottawa. We sure have a lot less deer and lots of missing cats.

The animal looked at me for a few moments and continued to do its thing like as if I wasn't even there. It kept barking (not howling) along the edges of all the homes on the golf course. It was all alone and I think maybe it was trying to lure dogs out to investigate. It would howl for a few seconds between "barks". This continued for about 2 minutes.

wolf near P15 Slack road
by: Anonymous

I saw a wolf two days ago at around 4 pm running across the trail where I was and it was going west. It was not too far from the P15 parking on Slack road. I am not an expert to know the difference between a wolf and a coyote but I have been searching online for images of the two and what I saw seems to be closer to a wolf than to a coyote. It was for sure bigger than a husky and had a long tail. It had white and grey hair. I was surprise to see one and it was beautiful.

Wolf Crossing Dwyer Hill Road

About 7:00 pm last night, September 4th, I saw a large Gray Wolf cross Dwyer Hill Road very near 'The herb Garden' sign.. So, between the Almonte/March Road and highway 7 on Dwyer Hill. It crossed the road from east to west at what I would call a slow run. Moving quickly and confidently, eyes focused straight ahead. There was no other traffic around at that time, and I would estimate it to have been about 80 feet ahead of me. I was both startled and awe-struck by the sighting.

Coyote or Wolf at Prince of Wales and Hunt Club

On September 2nd, at around 12:30 in the morning, I was coming home from the airport to Barrhaven. While I waited for the traffic light to turn green I saw two big dog-like animals right across from the Prince of Wales Drive / Hunt Club Road Esso gas station. They wandered on the side walk for a few seconds before disappearing into the bushes again. I thought they looked a bit bigger than Coyotes but I could be wrong. I cant imagine seeing Wolf or Coyote so close to the city, especially considering how busy that intersection is during the day.

Getting closer, it looked like a black fox. However, it didn't have the tail of a fox. So it may have been a very young black coy-dog. It disappeared into the brush.

My husband was walking our dogs behind the Nortel complex in May and they encountered what he believes was a Wolf? We see Coyotes often in the area and there are often deer carcasses in the area BUT this fella was much larger, had a very broad head and square nose. He also ran with a very large graceful movements. He was not afraid but also made no attempt to confront the three dogs, he just confidently carried on his way.

End of November 2013 My Medium sized white Pitbull/bull terrier mix was attacked by a grey wolf that myself and a friend, whom we both work with wildlife regularly saw with our own eyes. She was lucky enough to squirm away and as soon as we made eye contact with the wolf he took off. He was very large and looked healthy. We did not stick around to see if there was a pack waiting. Location was behind the Steeple hill Church in Fallowfield area. We had walked for over an hour in the wooded area and just before we left he took her down from behind.

Just before Christmas, I spotted a deer carcass on in the same field. It was there one day and gone the next. I could see where the carcass had been dragged back into the trees...more wolf evidence.
Now, just yesterday I spotted a very healthy grey wolf crossing Timm drive and then trotting down the tree line.
I personally welcome them to the neighbourhood as they have reduced the number of deer hits on Timm Drive and Robertson Road.

It sounded like maybe 4 or 5 separate Wolves. It lasted about 10 seconds with maybe 15 or 20 individual howls, and they sounded to be maybe 500 to 1000 meters away in the woods.
Seconds after it stopped, a second group began to howl in a very similar fashion. They were much further away, possibly 2 or 3 times further.
When that finished, we sheepishly decided to head back inside.

As fast as they come and you hear them, they disappear, so by the time I can bounce up and run to get a look to identify from my back door, its too late :( Being a huge nature \ animal lover its disappointing to miss the chance. Hit something that seemed too big for a Coyote on Highway 417, just west of 416 and before Moodie exit going west. Just his morning, at 6:45 or so. It jumped out of the underbrush on the left side of the highway right in front of the car. Just got a glimpse of reddish - brownish fur, big animal, long big tail, could this be a wolf?
Very sad day!
Got on the web to see if I could find some photos and saw this site/post. I was sure it was too bit to be a Coyote. Never heard about the hybrid before. Very upsetting. Quite a bit of damage to the car, in the shop, undrivable, so it was a sizeable animal.

Saw a pack of wolves, literally on the side of the road the other day in Kanata on Terry Fox between March Rd. and Scotiabank Place. They appeared to be stalking a coyote which I saw just seconds before the wolves. They paid no attention to me or another driver who was stopped mid highway behind me. They were fixated on the coyote it seemed. After speaking to authorities, I was told that this act would not be uncommon, but a full pack sighting so close to city, was. Deer, family pets , and wild turkeys are also plentiful in the area. It was about 11 pm. They were of various size and color, the alpha seemed brownish in color. They were all quite large. (bigger than most I have ever seen....I cottage in the Ottawa valley and see them from time to time.) The coyote was a mutt colour, smaller, and didn't look so healthy, but I am no veterinarian. It was quite a sight. For anyone who thinks wolves are just big dogs...think again and If you see them around where they shouldn't be, do as I did and call authorities. It will help in the safety of both the community and of the wolves themselves. Beautiful creatures.

Between Kingston and Ottawa
by: Anonymous

We used to have a hobby farm about one mile outside of the town of Lyndhurst, Ontario. It was not that uncommon to hear Wolves at night in the woods behind the tree line from our house. We knew they were there and left them alone. Sometimes we'd see them. They were not Coyotes and were nearly always in packs. I actually saw one late one night in the town of Westport walking right in the middle of town. It was in the middle of winter and everything was deserted.

The closest I've come to being near them was while walking my dog one winter day in our woods. They followed me back to the house again behind the tree line, while I was on our trail. I could barely see them back there and I had some little ways to go so it was a little intimidating. My dog was a Great Dane but, very gentle yet I didn't figure they would do anything "bad" to us as the dog was so big. However, there were about five of them and two of us! Sometimes, I'd see the pack foot prints in the snow. Their paws are huge!

In all the years I lived out there they never bothered us and it was really quite a thrill to walk out on our porch at night when they were calling. Amazing! In that area we'd seen Bears, Coyotes, Deer, Foxes, and yes Wolves.

That was a few years ago. Some years the farmers would have trouble with them and some years not so much. The only bad thing that ever happened was a Fox got all our chickens one night but, nothing bad was ever caused by the Wolves. I feel privileged to have shared our land with these amazing creatures!

It bothers me that the wolf population might be much less now than it was then.

It finally stood up and I realized it was as big as our 80 pound Lab. Our lab turned and started for the house just as another wolf came out of the woods. Both jumped the fence into horse pasture adjacent to our house. I watched as 3 more wolves joined the pack about 20 feet from my window. They just calmly looked at me.
Had my 3 dogs in the house by then. The wolves meandered around the pasture, even stopped to lay down and calmly walked down a ravine and up the other side into a field and then disappeared from site. We live on NCC farm land and have animals.

Report sightings to be useful
by: Anonymous

When you report animal sightings, you must include date/time and address (a link from https://maps.google.com is better) with a detailed description of the animals and their behavior. What they were doing, were they in a group or alone. Upload a photo to any photo sharing site and post the address (URL). Ignore other reports - a wolf report in your area doesn't mean that it wasn't a large coyote or mixed breed. Posting "saw a wolf yesterday" is not useful.

If there are enough reports with location info, someone could create a map (google.com provides service to create such a map).

I maintain coyote information for Manotick-Osgoode on the Manotick Directory: http://www.manotick.net/docs/coyotes.html

I saw a large Red Wolf in my backyard trail Friday morning February 1, 2013.

The trails behind Otto BMW. I looked out of of my kitchen window and I couldn't believe it.

I knew it was a Wolf because I know what they look like from my cottage. It was alone and sniffing around the trails. I was afraid for the little dogs running on the trails and small kids.

So I called the police and they came and walked the trails to try to locate it. Not sure if they did.

I followed the Wolf for a bit and knew it was dangerous when they are alone out of the pack but I wanted to keep an eye.

I saved a couple's little dog because they were walking with the dog loose up ahead.

The wolf was obviously hungry and would have grabbed the dog.

I had no idea wolves were around here!

Wolf on Ottawa River
by: Anonymous

No binoculars unfortunately but we have just seen c.1645 today from river path beneath Birch area car park, a single large seemingly low-slung brown bushy animal slowly crossing Ottawa River from Kettle Island and exiting probably around Rockliffe Yacht Club.
Reassuring from comments here confirming existence of Wolves in area that first reaction that this was probably a wolf may well be right.
Too big for Coyote and body shape and deportment not right for a deer.

Wolf in Riverside South
by: Anonymous

Just spotted a Wolf cross the street in Riverside South neighbourhood south of the Airport (around 11:45pm Dec 29/12). Second spotting of a Wolf in the past 5 years, pretty rare. Coyotes are spotted every now and then but this was definitely a Wolf, it was white.

Wolves at old Rockliffe base
by: Anonymous

Be aware! I was walking with my dogs in the abandoned old Rockliffe base that is under discussion for redevelopment.
To make a long story short, a lone Wolf followed me close behind for 15 minutes until I finally got to my car parked at end of Hemlock road.
He had friends as the howling began right before I reached my car and the two Wolves were about 50 - 80 feet behind my friends and I.
There have been several sightings in the Aviation Parkway area, however no mention that they have followed people .... until now. Close call it was!!
Please be careful The city of Ottawa Animal Control was notified.

I just saw what looked like a Wolf run across the road right in front of me. I was heading north and it was just before the new pedestrian crossing being built. Very beautiful. It looked like it was chasing something, as it veered off once it had crossed the road.

Wolves on Hunt Club near the Lone Star
by: Norman S

Last night (December 3 2012) around 9:30 I had just turned onto Hunt Club from the 416. I saw something moving in the right hand ditch.
Usually there are deer in the area, except it was small to be a deer and I could only see the top of the back and no head.
As I looked up to the road I saw what at first glance was a large "dog". It looked like a husky, only it was too large to be a husky.
I thought it may be a Wolf as I had heard there are wolves in the area. Now I am certain it was.

Wolf sighting near Carleton U
by: Rob Mcculloch

November 20, 2012 @ 7:30pm. Colonel By Drive and Bronson Ave. Side of road, a single wolf, grey and white, about 25 feet from our car. We stopped, looked at it for a minute or so, then it wandered off into the woods. The spot is very close to where many Carleton students walk by when exiting campus on the north end to access Bronson bridge.

Two howling wolves
by: Anonymous

At 2 am, November 17, I heard 2 Wolves howling in the Bridlewood area of Kanata, Ontario. I've lived here 12 years, and this past year I've spotted lone coy-wolves and lone Coyotes on my walks with my dog on the paths along the power lines. This is the first time I've actually heard them, and a pair of them at that.

Several months ago, my dog chased a coy-wolf on the bike path across Stonehaven Drive. It then chased her, but got scared of me, stepped aside, and watched us walk away.

I saw a brown Coyote in our backyard just a week ago, which I mistook for a dog. As I approach it, I recognized what it was. It got scared of me and walked away.

There is so much new construction and deforestation in Kanata, that these normally shy animals are moving in closer to housing areas. I don't like that I heard two of them, as they are more dangerous in packs, but these two might have been fighting for territory (not sure). Either way, keep your cats and small dogs safe, and be on the lookout.

Thanks for the heads-up on these animals in your area

I saw a Brown Wolf right behind my house in the new construction development between Hope Side Road and Emerald Meadows subdivision.
It was calmly walking and looking around in the construction zone (mid morning).
Very surprised to see it in such a populated area, definitely not a Coyote.

Three Wolves
by: Anonymous

A colleague and I on our way to the Ottawa airport Thursday October 18th at about 8am spotted 3 adult Wolves in a clearing on the North West corner of Moodie and Hunt Club. These were definitely not Coyotes which I have seen many times. It was somewhat shocking to see them so close to residential areas and near trails I have walked and cycled. I have never seen Wolves this close in the wild although I have observed them many times in zoos and wildlife centers.

Wolf Sighting
by: Anonymous

October 17, 2012 Driving along the Rockcliffe Parkway I saw this large dog-like animal in the field. Stopped and took many pictures. As I watched it roaming around the fields it became apparent to me that it was a Wolf. We watched it pounce on little critters looking for food in the long grasses. People walking in this area should be aware of this sighting.

Wolf on Aviation Parkway

A friend from school and I were driving back from Rockcliff Park today when we saw an odd looking dog.

Curious, she turned around to take another look at the dog. My friend being from Maniwaki has seen her share of Wolves and was pretty sure it was a Wolf.

It was when we U turned for the second time, passing him again, that I was positive it was a Wolf, dogs don't trot in a single line like a horse would.

That was around 3pm driving on Aviation Parkway.

Thanks for your report - it is very interesting that there are Wolves in the Ottawa, Ontario, area.

Wow, we travel right past that field every day, usually at around 7:00 a.m. or slightly earlier. Will be watching to see if we can spot him. There has been alot of deer action over the past few weeks but have not seen a coyote (or possible wolf) in several months now.

Wolf

Saw one on trail (Bridelwood area) - mid September 2012. No doubt, a Wolf. I have a Bernese Mountain Dog and this critter was as big as my dog.

I have ran hundreds of miles over the past several years in that area and saw tons of wildlife, but never a Wolf.

Plus, I hear them at night. I know a Wolf from a Coyote both visually and by sound.

I was running in the early morning & it crossed my path in front about 20 metres away. Neat but kinda troubling in that I kept looking back to make sure I was not breakfast for the rest of pack...

Pointy ears and tail seem to represent a WOLF, not a Coyote, no doubt.

I travel the main path in the greenbelt between Bells Corners and Kanata, Ontario, everyday, but it's usually the farmer's field across the overpass I see activity.

Once saw a Wolf playing with the crows.

Wolf howling in Bells Corners- July 14 2012
by: fallon McAaron

At about 1:30 p.m., I was heading to bed and my bedroom window was open. I thought I heard a Wolf howling and I debated as to whether or not it really was a Wolf, but it didn't have the same sort of yipping sound as Coyotes, which are fairly common in the greenbelt and which I am more familiar with. Did anyone else hear this?

Wolf near Navan
by: Anonymous

On a very early morning walk just before sunrise, on the Prescott-Russell recreational trail, somewhere in between Mer-Bleue and Trim road, I have seen a Wolf from far, in the middle of a private farmland, sprinting back towards the woods!

No doubts in my mind about the species!

The Coyote is also very common in the area... but this one here was twice as big (if not 3), more grey than brown and while he ran, its tail was straight out.(All coyotes I've seen were keeping their tail down when running).

Anyways, so far, I had seen pretty much all the kind of wild animals and birds around here!

By adding the Wolf, the only one missing on my list is the Cougar! (Now that would be somewhat unrealistic).

Wolf/Coyote in Kanata - Bells Corners
by: Mary

Last fall I saw what I thought was a Coyote in my backyard (I live along the greenbelt on Robertson Road)- it was watching my cats on the back deck and was quite close to the house, but took off when it saw me.

Last week I saw what was definitely a Coyote on the property, and it looked very different from the other animal I saw - different colouring and much smaller.

I think the one from last fall may have been a Wolf!

He was beautiful, but a bit scary that he looked to be hunting my cats.

Very large possible wolf-coyote hybrid last seen a week ago in Deevy Pines Park in Kanata. It was very larg (80lbs?) in comparison to the coyotes. It kept its distance but it was in an open area (former playground space)at 4:30 in the afternoon.

I was walking my 93lb dog and this thing was definitely comparable in height. (22-23 inches at the shoulder) Seemed a little older and slow but absolutely no fear of me & my dog.

In the late 90's I heard that there were Wolves that traveled up and down the power line from the NCC forested area. Makes me wonder if they have cross-bred with the coyotes.

I am also in Kanata. I have seen Coyotes but this one was much bigger than any I had seen previously.

I like the fact they are very afraid, keep their distance and never roam to the front street to get our garbage - yet.

It looks very well fed nonetheless.

Wolves in the NCC - Kanata
by: Susan

While walking my dog in the NCC (near Bridlewood, Kanata) yesterday, I also saw a Wolf. It was about the size of my dog (90lbs). My dog was off the leash at the time and came face to face with it. I was afraid that they might get into an altercation, but the Wolf (or large Coyote) ran off.

When my dog came back I put him on the leash and then a few minutes later the Wolf came out onto the trail and was watching us.

It was so beautiful. I wish that I had my camera with me.

I have seen Wolves or Coyotes several times in this area.

My daughter and I saw a Wolf in Kanata (Bridlewood) today, October I while walking our dogs. It stopped for a few seconds and stared at us before walking back into the woods. It was in a clearing and was definitely a wolf. I had heard that wolves sometimes came out of the NCC forest but had never seen one. A rare occasion indeed.

I live with a hunter, and the howling that we are hearing in Kanata is definitely Coyotes.

I hear them from October to Snow fall every year.

They run right behind Morgans Grant, in Kanata.
